Samurai Clan Name Generator

Samurai clans (shi or ke) took their names almost entirely from places. The great houses of the Sengoku period are mostly named for the estate or district where the founding line first settled: Takeda, Hojo, Oda, Tokugawa, Uesugi, Mori, Shimazu, Chosokabe. Behind those sat the four ancient lineages that almost every warrior family claimed descent from, Minamoto (Genji), Taira (Heishi), Fujiwara and Tachibana, and historians still distinguish branches by province, as in Kai Takeda, Aki Takeda and Wakasa Takeda, or Yamanouchi Uesugi and Ogigayatsu Uesugi.

Because clan names are surnames, they follow Japanese surname structure: two kanji, usually a landscape or directional word such as yama (mountain), kawa (river), ta (field), mori (forest), matsu (pine), kita (north) or naka (middle), read with two to four syllables. Kurosawa, Hayakawa and Takamori sound like real clans because they are built from the same parts as Kurokawa, Hasegawa and Mori. Names ending in -be, -bu, -to and -ki often signal older, Heian-era lineages.
