Y2K names sit at a very specific moment: the years just before and after the millennium, roughly 1998 to 2004, when baby-name charts and pop culture briefly agreed on a sound. Girls' names went soft and breathy (Ashley, Brittany, Kayla, Hailey, Destiny), and parents started reinventing spellings, so Kaitlyn, Caitlyn and Katelyn all lived in the same class. Boys' names took on the surname-as-first-name look (Tyler, Hunter, Tanner, Colton) or the new -ayden family (Jayden, Brayden, Kaden), which shot up the charts almost overnight.

The other half of Y2K naming lived on screens.
