Generate painting titles in the manner of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, such as The Adoration of the Shepherds, Portrait of a Young Man with a Glove and Allegory of Fortune and Prudence. Made for fiction, games, art class, parody and pastiche.

About Renaissance painting names

Painters of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries rarely titled their work. Most of the names on museum labels today were given later by cataloguers, and they are plain descriptions of the subject: The Adoration of the Shepherds, Saint Jerome in the Wilderness, Portrait of a Young Man with a Glove. That is why so many paintings share a name. Subjects such as the Annunciation or the Adoration of the Magi were painted in workshop after workshop, and the wording barely changes from one label to the next.

This list holds 1,000 titles written in that manner. None is offered as a real painting, though many of these subjects and phrasings are ones real works carry too. It covers Madonna and Child groupings, Gospel scenes, single saints with their attributes, Old Testament heroes and heroines, myths from Ovid, allegories and triumphs, portraits named by dress, object or trade, Northern scenes of donors, merchants and peasants, altarpiece panels and fresco cycles, battles, processions and city views. A small share is in Italian or Latin, such as Sacra Conversazione and Salvator Mundi.

Still life and pure landscape are left out, because they were only starting to stand on their own in this period. A landscape usually still had a story in it, as in Landscape with the Flight into Egypt.

How to choose Renaissance painting names

  • Name the subject and stop. A period-style title says who or what is shown, as in The Judgment of Solomon, and never what the painter felt about it.
  • Give a saint the right attribute so the title rings true: Saint Catherine has her wheel, Saint Barbara her tower, Saint Agnes a lamb and Saint Jerome a lion or a study.
  • For an invented altarpiece, build it from parts: a central panel with the main subject, two wings with kneeling donors and a predella of small scenes from a saint's life.
  • Sitters whose names are lost are labeled by what can be seen, an age, a garment, an object or a trade, as in A Banker at His Counting Table.
  • In a story or a game, make it clear the work is invented, and do not attach a real painter, date or collection to one of these titles.

Frequently asked questions

Are these the titles of real Renaissance paintings?

No title here is offered as a real work. They are written in the manner of the period, which means plain descriptions of a subject. Because so many painters treated the same subjects, real paintings do carry names such as The Annunciation or Saint George and the Dragon, and both are in the list as shared subjects.

Why do so many Renaissance paintings have the same name?

Patrons ordered subjects, not titles: an Adoration of the Magi for a chapel, a Madonna and Child for a bedchamber. Later cataloguers described what they saw, so the same subject got the same words again and again. Museums tell such works apart by painter, date and collection, which this list leaves out on purpose.

What kinds of titles are in the list?

Sacred subjects make up the largest part, as they did in the period: Madonna and Child groupings, Gospel scenes, saints and Old Testament stories. The rest are myths such as Apollo and Daphne, allegories such as The Triumph of Time, portraits, Northern scenes such as The Money Changer at His Bench, altarpiece and fresco labels, and battles, processions and city views.

Can I use one of these titles for a painting in my novel or game?

Yes. Subject titles such as Judith and Her Maidservant or Tobias and the Angel have been used by many artists and work well for a fictional gallery, a heist plot or a tabletop campaign. If the plot needs a painting that never existed, invent the painter and the collection as well.
