Generate Rashemi names for D&D and the Forgotten Realms: given names like Brumovik and Yelzimra, full names like Harvuk Tselmoroga, berserkers like Gorvuslak of the Ice Troll Lodge and witches like Hathran Yelzhara.

About Rashemi names

The Rashemi are the human people of Rashemen, the cold land north of Thay in the Forgotten Realms, known for its berserkers and its masked witches. The 2014 fifth edition Player's Handbook lists them among the human ethnicities and sets the sound with a short sample: men such as Borivik, Faurgar and Madislak, women such as Fyevarra, Hulmarra and Yuldra, and long surnames ending in -a, such as Chergoba and Murnyethara. The names have a Slavic flavor, but they are inventions, not real Russian or Polish names.

Titles follow the setting. The witches, the wychlaran, are women and rank as Ethran, Hathran and Othlor. Men with a gift for magic become the Old Ones, the vremyonni. Berserkers belong to lodges, their warbands are called fangs, and one Iron Lord rules at a time. Young Rashemi leave on a dajemma, a journey to prove themselves.

This list holds 1,000 names. The handbook's 22 samples and two well-known characters, Minsc and Dynaheir, appear as single labeled entries. Everything else was made up for this page on the same sound: given names, surnames, full names, lodge berserkers, witches, Old Ones, chieftains, rangers, brewers and traders. The six lodges are from the sourcebooks; the masks, fangs and bynames are invented. These are fan-made names, not official material.

How to choose Rashemi names

  • Pick the pattern first. A plain Rashemi name is a given name plus a long surname ending in -a, such as Harvuk Tselmoroga or Shaldra Okhmyenara. On this list, villagers often go by a given name and a trade, like Bolmek the Firewine Brewer.
  • Keep the titles straight. Ethran, Hathran and Othlor are ranks of the witches, who are women. A male spellcaster is an Old One, as in Old One Brevomar.
  • Use one Iron Lord per campaign. Rashemen has a single Iron Lord at a time, so treat the entries with that title as alternatives and give lesser leaders the title of chieftain.
  • Give a berserker a lodge. Entries such as Yarguvik of the Owlbear Lodge name one of six lodges, while a byname like Vedrik Frost-Knuckle works when the lodge does not matter.
  • Say it aloud before the session. Clusters such as ny, ye and zh run through this list, but a name the table cannot pronounce will be cut down to a nickname by the second scene.

Frequently asked questions

What do Rashemi names sound like?

Heavy and Slavic-flavored, with endings such as -vik, -slak and -gar for men and -arra, -ith, -zel and -dra for women. Surnames are long and end in -a. Brumovik, Yelzimra and Vorshegoba from this list are typical.

Are these names from the D&D books?

Twenty-four entries are published names: the 22 Player's Handbook samples, each labeled as such, plus Minsc and Dynaheir, two characters from the Baldur's Gate games. The rest are invented in the same sounds for your own characters and are not part of the published setting. This page is fan-made and is not official material.

What is the difference between Ethran, Hathran and Othlor?

They are the three ranks of the wychlaran, the witches of Rashemen. An Ethran is a newly initiated witch, a Hathran is a full sister, and the Othlor are the few who lead. The list writes them as Ethran Mivyeska, Hathran Yelzhara and Othlor Evdrissa.

Can a Rashemi man be a witch?

No. The wychlaran are women. Men with a talent for magic become vremyonni, the Old Ones, who live apart and craft magic items. The list has them as Vremyonni Yelgrash or Ostuvar of the Running Rocks.
