About Kroot names

The Kroot are the tall, quilled, bird-descended hunters of Warhammer 40,000, natives of the world Pech who fight beside the T'au Empire and hire out as mercenaries across the galaxy. Their names sound nothing like the T'au pattern of caste, sept and personal name. A Kroot name is short and harsh, usually two parts, full of k, kh, gh and rolled r sounds that suit a beak, as in Anghkor Prok or Dahyak Grekh.

Most of this list is personal names in that mold: two-part names such as Ghekkar Prah and Yrrak Dohl, single names such as Krekh for line warriors, and names with a hunter's byname, such as Krahk Bone-Reader. Leaders carry a title in front. Shapers guide what a kindred hunts and eats, and so what it becomes, so the list has Shapers, Master Shapers, War, Flesh and Trail Shapers, along with kill team roles such as Kill-broker and Long-sight.

The rest names groups and beasts: kindreds, kinbands and hunting packs, mercenary bands such as The Paid Talons, Kroot Hounds, Krootox and Knarlocs, and the warspheres that carry a kindred between the stars. All of it is invented in the style of the setting, and none is presented as a name from Games Workshop's books.

How to choose Kroot names

  • Build the name from the beak outward. Use k, kh, gh, t and r, keep the vowels short, and stop on a hard sound: Okhtar Kresh, Tahyek Grok, Khekkat Orr. Clicks and croaks are the model, not flowing syllables.
  • Leave T'au forms to the T'au. No caste prefix, no sept name and no apostrophes: a Kroot fighting for a cadre is still just Dakhor Prell.
  • Give the Shaper the longest name on the roster. A title such as Master Shaper or War Shaper in front of a two-part name marks the leader at a glance, while line warriors can go by one word like Ghorr or Trakh.
  • Name the kindred after what it hunts or where it nests. Kindred of the Jagged Canopy, Mirebeak Kinband and Kindred of Nine Trails each hint at a home and a diet, which is most of a kindred's story.
  • Do not forget the beasts. Kroot Hounds suit quick, snapping names such as Snapbeak or Yip, and a Krootox deserves something heavy like Old Thunder or Treeshaker.

Frequently asked questions

How are Kroot names structured?

The best-known Kroot, Anghkor Prok and Dahyak Grekh, both have a two-part name, and this list follows them: a two-syllable first part and a short, hard second part, as in Ghekkar Prah or Krohak Yett. A title such as Shaper or Tracker goes in front, and a byname can take the place of the second part, as in Ghorrat Quill-Cutter.

Are these Kroot names from the Warhammer 40,000 books?
