Real country names come from a surprisingly small set of sources: a people (France from the Franks, England from the Angles), a geographic feature (Montenegro, Iceland, Costa Rica), a founder or patron (Bolivia, Colombia, the Philippines) or an old descriptive phrase (Argentina, "land of silver"). Most also end in a recognisable suffix — -ia, -land, -stan, -mark, -ania — that tells the ear this is a place rather than a person. A good fictional nation borrows one of these origins and one of these suffixes, which is why Valdoria or Ostmark sound plausible while a random syllable soup does not.

Every state also has two names: the short form used on maps and in conversation (Germany, Iran) and the long form used on passports and treaties (Federal Republic of Germany, Islamic Republic of Iran). This list gives you both. Short forms like Tavuria and Kestria are easy to label on a map; long forms like the Sultanate of Qaresh or the United Cantons of Helvane instantly tell you how the country is governed and what its neighbours might think of it.

When picking a name, decide the country's linguistic region first. Sultanates and emirates suit Arabic-flavoured roots (Qaresh, Rashadi); kingdoms with -mark and -heim feel Germanic or Nordic; republics ending in -ia sit comfortably anywhere from the Balkans to South America. Consistency between the name, the government type and the region is what makes an invented nation feel lived-in.
