The third is the companion tradition, where a dragon is named by its rider: Saphira, Toothless, Temeraire, Ramoth. These sound like pet names or ship names, and they suit stories where the dragon is a character rather than a calamity. Choose the tradition that fits the dragon's role, then match syllable weight to size: monosyllables and short names for young or friendly dragons, four-syllable names with hard endings for ancient wyrms.
