Generate dragon names with real weight behind them: legendary wyrms from Norse and Tolkien lore, hissing draconic tongue names, and evocative titles like Vermithrax or Ashvarrak. Built for fantasy novels, D&D campaigns, and anyone naming a scaled companion.

About random dragon names

Dragon names carry three distinct traditions, and it helps to know which one you are reaching for. The oldest is mythological: Fafnir and Nidhogg from Norse sagas, Ladon and Python from Greek myth, Vritra from the Vedas, Tiamat from Babylon. These names are short, hard, and often mean something like "embracer" or "the coiled one." Tolkien built on that tradition when he named Glaurung, Scatha, and Ancalagon the Black, and modern fantasy inherited its love of growling consonants and heavy final syllables.

The second tradition is the "draconic tongue": names built to sound like a language older than any human speech. Skyrim's dragons (Paarthurnax, Odahviing) are three-word compounds meaning things like "ambition overlord cruelty," D&D's chromatic wyrms lean on x, z, th, and ax endings (Ashardalon, Klauth), and George R. R. Martin's Valyrian dragons use liquid s and x sounds (Balerion, Meraxes, Syrax). Names like Vermithrax, Xathrazor, and Kaelthorax follow those rules.

The third is the companion tradition, where a dragon is named by its rider: Saphira, Toothless, Temeraire, Ramoth. These sound like pet names or ship names, and they suit stories where the dragon is a character rather than a calamity. Choose the tradition that fits the dragon's role, then match syllable weight to size: monosyllables and short names for young or friendly dragons, four-syllable names with hard endings for ancient wyrms.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the dragon's role: mythic-sounding names (Fafnir, Glaurung) for antagonists, draconic-tongue names (Vermithrax, Karrundax) for D&D-style monsters, and softer rider-given names (Saphira, Stormfly) for companions.
  • Ancient dragons in most fantasy have names of three or four syllables ending in a heavy consonant cluster (-ax, -oth, -rung); hatchlings and young dragons get one or two syllables.
  • Give a dragon an epithet as well as a name (Ancalagon the Black, Smaug the Golden, Vermithrax Pejorative). The epithet is what villagers and bards will actually use.
  • For a themed brood or clan, keep one shared sound: the Targaryen dragons share -x and -on endings, Pern's share -th, Skyrim's are all dovahzul compounds.
  • Avoid names that are just an English word plus 'wing' or 'claw' unless the dragon is young, cute, or named by a child; they read as generic next to a proper old-tongue name.

Frequently asked questions

What are some famous dragon names from mythology and fiction?

From myth: Fafnir, Nidhogg, and Jormungandr (Norse), Ladon and Python (Greek), Tiamat (Babylonian), Vritra (Vedic), and Y Ddraig Goch (Welsh). From fiction: Smaug and Glaurung (Tolkien), Balerion and Drogon (Game of Thrones), Saphira (Eragon), Toothless (How to Train Your Dragon), Alduin and Paarthurnax (Skyrim), and Temeraire.

How do you make up a dragon name that sounds ancient?

Use three or four syllables, favor hard consonants like k, g, th, x, and z, and end on a closed syllable such as -ax, -oth, -rung, or -gorn. Vermithrax, Karrundax, and Nazgorath all follow this pattern. Adding an epithet ('the Undying', 'the Black') completes the effect.

Are these names free to use for my D&D dragon or novel?

The invented names are free to use anywhere. Canonical dragons like Smaug, Drogon, or Alduin belong to their franchises and are fine for home games or fan fiction but should not be reused for original characters in published or commercial work.

Do dragons have gendered names?

Rarely in myth, but modern fantasy often uses softer endings for female dragons (Saphira, Meleys, Alexstrasza, Sindragosa) and heavier endings for males (Glaedr, Balerion, Deathwing). Treat it as a convention you can follow or ignore; a female dragon named Ancalagon is perfectly valid.
