In Britain, saints' names (St. Cuthbert's, St. Hilda's) mark schools founded by the church, while Hall, Grange, Court, Manor and Abbey come from the country house a school moved into a century ago.

More recent independent schools tend to choose either a classical virtue (Veritas, Sapientia, Lumen Christi) or a single crisp noun that suggests place without geography (The Beacon School, The Meridian School). Girls' and boys' schools, military academies, arts conservatories and international-baccalaureate schools each add their descriptor to the end.
