About college football rivalry names

Real college football rivalries are named in a handful of repeatable ways, and this list follows each of them. The oldest pattern is a local product or landmark plus Bowl or Classic: the Iron Bowl comes from Birmingham's steel mills, the Egg Bowl and Apple Cup from a trophy and a state crop. The second is the trophy game, where the object matters more than the teams: Paul Bunyan's Axe, the Old Oaken Bucket, the Little Brown Jug, the Keg of Nails. Newer games phrase these as Battle for the Golden Boot or Battle for the Iron Skillet.

Geography supplies the rest: Border War, Backyard Brawl, Red River Rivalry, Holy War, Battle of the Palouse. A few rivalries go by a single word (Bedlam) or a date (the Third Saturday in October), and the best unofficial names drip with bad blood, like Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.

For a dynasty-mode or fictional rivalry, make the name sound inherited rather than invented: pick a trophy a 1920s athletic director could have found in a barn, or a geographic line the two campuses actually sit on. How do real college football rivalries get their names?

Age and specificity. Real rivalry names reference an object, place or industry that would have mattered in the early twentieth century, and they are rarely flashy. The Sawdust Bowl or the Battle for the Old Tin Cup sounds like it has a 90-year scoreboard; the Mega Clash does not.
