Color Name Generator
Paint-chip style names for every shade and swatch
Generate color names the way paint brands, cosmetics lines and designers do: classic pigment names like Vermilion and Cerulean, evocative swatch names like Misty Harbor and Burnt Sugar, and nature-borrowed shades from gems, birds, fruit and flowers.
About color names
Color names come from a few reliable places. The oldest are pigments and the materials they were ground from: Vermilion from cinnabar, Ultramarine from lapis carried across the sea, Sienna and Umber from Italian earth, Prussian Blue from a Berlin lab accident. A second layer borrows directly from nature, where the thing itself is the shade: Peach, Olive, Salmon, Slate, Lavender, Teal (the duck), Coral and Sable. The newest and largest layer is the paint-chip name, where brands attach a mood or a place to a hue, so a pale grey-blue becomes Misty Harbor and a warm cream becomes Oat Milk.
A good invented color name works on two levels: it hints at the actual hue and it carries a feeling. Burnt Sugar says brown-amber and smells like caramel; Glacier says pale icy blue and feels cold. Names that are pure mood with no color cue (Serenity, Tranquil) only work printed next to a swatch, which is why paint decks get away with them and fiction or product copy usually cannot.
This list mixes artist pigments, plant dyes, classic and heraldic hues, Japanese color words, gemstones, foods, plants, animals, textiles, ceramics, landscapes and times of day, so you can pull a name for a paint line, a nail polish, a yarn colorway, a design-system token or a character's eye color.
How to choose color names
- Decide whether the name must stand alone. A yarn shop label can say Wild Honey next to the skein, but a novel describing a dress needs the name to carry the hue on its own, so lean toward Saffron or Rust rather than Morning Fog.
- Match the vocabulary to the product: food and drink names (Latte, Merlot, Matcha) suit cosmetics and interiors, minerals and metals (Hematite, Gunmetal, Pewter) suit hardware and menswear, and flowers suit spring fashion and stationery.
- Keep a palette consistent. If your collection has Driftwood, Sea Glass and Tidewater, adding Nebula breaks the story; pick one theme and name every shade inside it.
- Check the hue the word implies before you use it. Teal, Periwinkle, Chartreuse and Puce are misremembered constantly, so print the swatch and ask someone to guess the color from the name.
- For software and design tokens, pair the evocative name with a neutral scale name (Cerulean 500, Cerulean 700) so engineers can still reason about lightness.
Frequently asked questions
How do paint companies come up with color names?
Naming teams start with the hue family and then pick a word or short phrase that tells a story about where it belongs: a kitchen, a beach house, a nursery. They draw on food, weather, landscape, travel and time of day, and they test names against the swatch so the two feel matched. Many of the names in this generator follow the same conventions.
What is the difference between a pigment name and a color name?
A pigment name like Cadmium Yellow, Phthalo Green or Burnt Sienna refers to a specific chemical or earth used to make paint, so it has a fixed, standardized hue. A color name like Buttercup or Forest Green describes an approximate shade and can vary from brand to brand.
Can I use these color names for my own products?
Common words and descriptive phrases like Sage, Terracotta or Blue Hour are widely reused across paint, cosmetics and yarn brands. We have not checked any name on this list against trademarks, so avoid copying a full branded collection, and search any distinctive two-word name before printing it on packaging, since some cosmetics and paint names are registered.
How do I name a color nobody can agree on, like a grey-green or a pinkish brown?
Use a natural object that sits in the same in-between zone: Eucalyptus, Sage or Lichen for grey-greens, Mushroom, Taupe or Rose Quartz for pink-leaning neutrals, Driftwood for grey-browns. Borrowing a real thing sidesteps the argument because everyone pictures the object instead of debating the category.
