Protagonist Name Generator

A protagonist's name gets read thousands of times, so it has to do two jobs at once: feel natural in dialogue and stay distinct from every other name in the book. Working novelists tend to favour two-to-three-syllable first names with a clear stress (Eleanor, Jonah, Wren, Caleb) and surnames that add texture without tripping the reader, often borrowed from places, trades or nature: Mercer, Halloway, Ashford, Thorne. The best ones carry a faint suggestion of character, the way Atticus sounds principled and Sloane sounds sharp, without spelling it out.

Genre shifts the register. Literary and contemporary fiction lean on real-world names with slightly uncommon pairings (Maren Quill, Silas Okafor). Thrillers like short, punchy leads (Jack Coventry, Reed Winslow). Romance and YA favour soft vowels and a little glamour (Aurelia Finch, Rhys Calloway). Fantasy and sci-fi heroes still work best when the name is pronounceable on first sight; readers will abandon a lead they cannot say in their head.
