About French Bulldog names

A Frenchie name usually starts with the French in French Bulldog. In France the breed is the Bouledogue Français, and French given names sit well on a small dog with a big presence: Gaston, Marcel, Henri and Étienne for males, Colette, Margaux, Manon and Capucine for females. Close behind come the words French speakers use on the ones they love, such as Chouchou, Doudou, Loulou, Ma Puce and Mon Chou, plus Toutou, the nursery word for a dog.

Food and Paris supply the next two groups. The bakery gives Brioche, Macaron, Canelé and Chouquette, the cheese board gives Comté and Reblochon, and the map gives Marais, Seine, Montmartre and Pigalle. Truffe is a good one to know: it is French for a truffle and also for a dog's nose.

The rest is about the dog itself. Bat ears suggest Radar, Belfry, Pipistrelle and Chauve-Souris, the French word for a bat. The compact, sturdy build gives Tank, Boulette (a little ball, as in a meatball), Costaud (sturdy) and Petit Four. Coat names are grouped by color: Bringé and Tigre for brindle, Fauve and Noisette for fawn, Pie and Arlequin for pied, Crème and Neige for cream, and Ardoise and Bleuet for blue.

How to choose French Bulldog names

  • Decide what to do about accents before you order a tag. Rémy, Zoé, Éclair and Crème look right with them, but engravers and vet forms do not always cope, so settle on a plain spelling as well.
  • Say the name the French way before you choose. Margaux sounds like mar-GO, Benoît like ben-WAH, Guillaume like ghee-YOHM, and Yves is simply EEV.
  • Some French words change with the dog's sex. Mignon and Chéri are the male forms, Mignonne and Chérie the female ones. Mon Chou and Ma Puce are said to anyone.
  • Let the coat choose: Bringé or Tigre for a brindle, Fauve or Miel for a fawn, Pie or Pierrot for a pied dog, Crème or Ivoire for a cream, and Ardoise or Brume for a blue.
  • For two Frenchies, pick a pair that already goes together, such as Astérix and Obélix, Athos and Porthos, Brioche and Macaron, or Croque-Monsieur and Croque-Madame.

Frequently asked questions

What are good French names for a French Bulldog?

For a male, try Gaston, Marcel, Henri, Jules, Rémy or Olivier. For a female, try Colette, Margaux, Amélie, Manon, Fleur or Zoé. Endearments work well as call names too: Bijou means jewel, and Chouchou and Loulou are everyday pet names in French.

What do French speakers call the breed?

In French it is the Bouledogue Français, with bouledogue being the French spelling of bulldog. English speakers shorten the name to Frenchie. Bouledogue is in the list as a name, and so is Toutou, the word small children use for a dog.

What are good names for a brindle, fawn, pied, cream or blue Frenchie?

The list has a group for each coat. Brindle dogs get Bringé, Tigre and Stripes, fawn dogs get Fauve, Noisette, Caramel and Biche, and pied dogs get Pie, Arlequin, Domino-style picks like Damier and Smoking, the French word for a tuxedo. Cream dogs get Crème, Neige and Perle, and blue dogs get Ardoise, Bleuet, Brume and Lavande.

Are there names about the bat ears and the small, sturdy build?

Yes. For the ears there are Radar, Sonar, Belfry, Fruit Bat, Batpig and Pipistrelle. For the build there are Tank, Nugget, Patate, which is French for potato, Petit Tank and Pocket Rocket. The jokes stay with the ears and the build.
