About funny Pokemon trainer names

The funniest trainer names are the ones the game says for you. Every line of dialogue that uses your name turns into a joke you set up hours earlier: call the rival Nobody and Nobody wants to battle, call yourself Somehow and Somehow received a badge. This list is built around that trick, for the player character and for the rival in the games that let you name one.

There are eight kinds of joke here: things that challenge you to a battle (Mom, Homework, The Wind), adverbs that change every battle message (Accidentally, Politely), trainer class parodies (Lass Chance, Camper Van), puns on the series itself (Ash Ketchup, Brock Lee, Prof Bonsai), menu text (Press Start, Default Name), answers to the professor who has forgotten his grandson's name (Dunno, No Idea), things you can defeat (The Odds, Yourself) and short silly words (Toast, Kazoo).

Every name is 12 characters or fewer, the limit since Pokemon X and Y. The English games before that allow only 7, and close to a third of the list fits that smaller box. All of it is clean enough to read with a child.

How to choose funny Pokemon trainer names

  • Test a name in three lines before you commit: "___ wants to battle!", "___ sent out Pikachu!" and "___ is out of usable Pokemon!" If it is funny in all three, keep it.
  • Check the limit for your game. X and Y and everything after take 12 characters. Earlier English games take 7, so pick from the short names such as Mom, Dunno, Toast or Hold B.
  • Save the question jokes for the rival. The professor forgets his grandson's name in Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, and those games take only 7 characters, so answer with Dunno, No Idea or Ask Him. I Forget, Beats Me and Whatshisname are too long for that box.
  • Other players see your name in trades and online battles, so keep it something you would say in front of your family.
  • In most of the games the name is fixed once the adventure begins. Choose a joke you can still enjoy forty hours in.

How long can a Pokemon trainer name be?

In the English games it is 12 characters since Pokemon X and Y, and 7 in the games before them. Every name here is 12 or fewer. Short ones such as Mom, Nugget, Press A and Oak Jr also fit the older games.

Which games let me name the rival?

The older ones do. Red, Blue and Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal, FireRed and LeafGreen, and Diamond, Pearl and Platinum all ask for the rival's name near the start. All of those take 7 characters at most, so use the short names there. In most later games the rival arrives with a name of their own, so the joke has to go on your own character.

How do dialogue gag names work?

The game drops the name into its text, so the name becomes part of the sentence. A rival called Nobody gives you a line such as "Nobody wants to battle!", and a player called Finally gets "Finally received the badge!" Adverbs such as Accidentally and Politely work in almost every battle message.

Are these names fine for kids and for online play?

They are written for a family audience, with no rude words and nothing that makes fun of a real person. The games also run their own filter on names, and we cannot say how it treats any one name. If a name is refused, choose another from the list.
