Pirate Book Name Generator
Titles for pirate novels and sea adventures
Generate titles for pirate novels and sea adventures, from Nine Fathoms to Tortuga and The Black Flag of Port Sorrow all the way to Captain Custard's Birthday Treasure. The list covers historical adventure, navy and privateer fiction, romance, children's books, memoirs and ghost ships, and it works for sailing and ocean books too.
About pirate book names
A pirate title has to tell a reader which voyage they are signing on for. Historical adventure names a place, a year or a ship (The Summer of 1718, Smoke Over Nassau, Mutiny on the Gilded Wren). Fiction told from the hunter's side borrows from the navy and the law: commissions, squadrons, prize courts and letters of marque (The Widow's Letter of Marque, Sealed Orders for Nassau). Romance pairs a rank with a rogue (The Heiress and the Buccaneer), and children's books lean on alliteration and a joke (Pip Barnacle and the Wobbly Plank).
The 1,000 titles here run through ships, flags, captains, crews, treasure maps, islands and ports, Golden Age history, pirate hunters and privateers, romance, picture books and middle grade, young adult, comic novels, a small share of ghost ships and sea witches, and memoirs in the long eighteenth-century manner (The True Account of a Reformed Sea Robber). There are also sea sayings and passage titles that suit a sailing or ocean book, and spare literary titles of a few words.
The titles are invented for this page, not collected from published novels, so classics such as Treasure Island, Captain Blood and On Stranger Tides are not among them. A short title can still match a book that exists, so search before you settle on one.
How to choose pirate book names
- Pick the shelf first: a place or a year for historical adventure (Tortuga, 1665), naval rank and legal terms for fiction from the hunter's side (Lieutenant Ashdown's Pursuit), a rank plus a rogue for romance, and alliteration for young readers.
- Use one pirate word per title. Flag, cutlass, doubloon and plank each do the job alone. Two or three together read as parody, which is right only for a comic novel such as A Very Polite Mutiny.
- Swap in your own ship, captain or port. The Trial of Captain Lazarus Finch and The Burning of Port Calder are frames: keep the shape and replace the proper noun with one from your story.
- For a series, choose a shape you can repeat, such as a ship in every title or a run of sea sayings (Eight Bells for a Scoundrel, Any Port in a Mutiny).
- Search a bookseller site for your shortlist before you commit. Short sea titles are popular, and sharing one with a book in print makes yours harder to find.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good pirate book title?
A good pirate title signals its subgenre and holds one concrete image: a ship, a flag, a map or a named rogue. Mutiny on the Gilded Wren promises shipboard adventure, The King's Pardon promises history, and Captain Custard's Birthday Treasure is plainly for small children. Avoid stacking genre words, because a title with skulls, gold and cutlasses all at once reads as a joke.
Are these the titles of real published books?
No. The titles are invented for this page and are not taken from published novels. Many are short, though, so one may still coincide with a book in print. Search for a title before you put it on a cover.
Do any titles use real pirates and real places?
Yes, a few. Historical titles such as Hornigold's Bargain, Lafitte's Barataria and Woodes Rogers Comes to Nassau name real figures, and Nassau, Port Royal and Tortuga were real pirate havens. They are ideas for historical novels, not statements of fact, so check the history yourself before you build a plot on one.
Can I use these titles for a sailing or ocean book with no pirates?
Yes. Passage titles such as Night Passage to Antigua, Sailing by Starlight and A Thousand Leagues of Blue mention no pirates at all, and spare titles like The Weather Gage, Long Swell and Under Jury Rig suit any novel set at sea. Reroll until one fits your voyage.
