Titles in the manner of the Victorian penny serials, for writers, tabletop games and pastiche, such as "The Lamplighter's Secret; or, The Fiend of Fetter Lane", "Crimson Kate, the Scourge of Shadwell" and "The Phantom Chaise of the Dover Road". Double titles, highwaymen, vampires, city mysteries and villains with sobriquets.

About penny dreadful names

Penny dreadfuls were the cheap serial stories of Victorian Britain, sold in weekly parts for a penny from the 1830s onward. Their titles did the selling. The classic shape is a double title joined by "; or,": a sensational hero, villain or place first, then a second line that promises blood, mystery or ruin. "Varney the Vampire; or, the Feast of Blood" is the model. The real serials also introduced Sweeney Todd, in "The String of Pearls", and retold the lives of highwaymen such as Dick Turpin and Jack Sheppard.

This list holds 1,000 titles in that manner. Seven are real serials, kept as models: "Varney the Vampire; or, the Feast of Blood", "The String of Pearls", "Wagner the Wehr-Wolf", "The Mysteries of London", "Ada the Betrayed; or, The Murder at the Old Smithy", "The Black Monk; or, The Secret of the Grey Turret" and "The Wild Boys of London; or, The Children of Night". The rest are originals with invented people, set in real London streets and on real heaths and coasts.

Many entries are a character's name with a sobriquet, such as "Crimson Kate, the Scourge of Shadwell", so they also work as names for a hero or villain. For plain period character names, try the Gothic Name Generator or the Victorian Name Generator.

How to choose penny dreadful names

  • Build a double title from two halves: a person, place or object first, then the sensation after "; or," as in "The Thirteenth Chime; or, The Bell-Ringer's Doom".
  • Anchor it in a real place. A named street, heath or stretch of coast (Fetter Lane, Hounslow Heath, Romney Marsh) makes an invented villain sound like a local legend.
  • For a character, use the sobriquet form: a nickname, a comma, then "the Terror of" or "the Pride of" somewhere specific. Alliteration was the house habit, as in "Gallows Gus, the Terror of Tooley Street".
  • Keep the gore to a cover line. The serials promised horrors in the title and delivered them in installments, so hint at the deed and leave the details out.
  • For a tabletop campaign, give each session a title and a part number, as the weekly parts had, and let the second half of the title tease the cliffhanger.

Frequently asked questions

What was a penny dreadful?

A cheap serial story sold in Britain in weekly parts for a penny, at its height in the middle of the 19th century. The stories were sensational: highwaymen, vampires, murderers and city crime, with an illustration at the head of each part. "Penny dreadful" was a disapproving nickname, and an earlier one was "penny blood".

Are these real penny dreadful titles?

Seven are: "Varney the Vampire; or, the Feast of Blood", "The String of Pearls", "Wagner the Wehr-Wolf", "The Mysteries of London", "Ada the Betrayed; or, The Murder at the Old Smithy", "The Black Monk; or, The Secret of the Grey Turret" and "The Wild Boys of London; or, The Children of Night". The rest were drafted for this page in the same style, with invented people. A great many penny serials were published and most are forgotten, so an original here could match an old one by chance: search a title before you publish under it.

Can I use a title as a character name?

Yes. A good share of the list is a hero's or villain's name with a sobriquet, such as "Razor Rudd, the Dread of the Docks" or "Starlight Sue, the Rose of the Rookery". Drop the second half for a plain nickname. For ordinary period names with surnames, the Gothic Name Generator and the Victorian Name Generator are the better tools.

Is this page connected to the television series Penny Dreadful?

No. The page has no affiliation with the series and uses none of its characters. It is about the Victorian printed serials that the show took its name from.
