Generate Palamute names for Monster Hunter Rise and Sunbreak: Japanese names that fit Kamura Village, monster-inspired names like Magna and Zinny, dog puns, hunter food words and heroic titles for the Canyne who carries you into every hunt.

About palamute names

Palamutes are the Canyne buddies introduced in Monster Hunter Rise: armored hunting dogs you ride across the Shrine Ruins, sharpen on the run and send lunging at a Magnamalo's legs. You name your first one during character creation, and a second follows once you unlock the Buddy Scout, so most hunters end up naming at least two. Because Rise is set in Kamura Village, a Japanese-flavoured name feels right at home next to Hinoa, Minoto and Fugen: Kiba (fang), Hayate (gale), Kuro, Shiro, Hachi and Musashi are all common in-game, and Sunbreak's Elgado adds room for knightly names like Galleus or Fiorayne.

The other big traditions are the same ones players use for Palicoes. Monster-derived names are everywhere (Magna, Zinny, Nargi, Tiggy, Val), as are names that lean into the dog side with puns such as Barkveld, Howlos and Pawlamute, and heroic titles like Captain Bark or Sir Woofsalot. Food and item words (Dango, Mochi, Nulberry, Whetstone) work for hunters who want something lighter, and wolf-god names (Fenrir, Garm, Amarok) suit the bigger Canyne armor sets.

The names below are short enough to fit the buddy name field and avoid symbols the in-game filter rejects, so you can use them as-is for a new Palamute or a new Rise save.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Keep it short: Palamute names appear in the quest HUD, chat log and Buddy Plaza, so two or three syllables reads better than a long title during a hunt.
  • Match the name to the Canyne armor set you plan to run. A Palamute in Magnamalo or Valstrax gear can carry a sharp monster name, while a Kamura-style set suits Hachi, Kiba or Momo.
  • If your Palico already has a pun name, give the Palamute a matching theme (Purrsephone and Howlos, Meowster and Barkster) so the pair feels like a unit in the Buddy Plaza.
  • Multiplayer shows buddy names to everyone in the lobby, so pick something you will still like reading four hundred hunts from now.
  • For your second or third Palamute, try the scout board's own naming first; hired buddies arrive with names and you can keep the good ones, then rename only the ones you ride most.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rename my Palamute in Monster Hunter Rise?

Yes. Talk to the Buddy Handler in the Buddy Plaza (Iori in Kamura or the Buddy Handler in Elgado) and choose the buddy management options. You can rename any Palamute or Palico there, as well as change its appearance, so a placeholder name at character creation is never permanent.

What are good Palamute names that fit the Monster Hunter setting?

Japanese words and names suit Kamura Village best: Kiba, Hayate, Kuro, Shiro, Raiden, Hachi and Musashi are all popular. Monster nicknames such as Magna, Zinny, Nargi and Tiggy are the other common choice, and Sunbreak's knightly Elgado characters make names like Galleus or Fiorayne fit a Palamute in Citadel armor.

How many Palamutes can I have, and do they all need names?

You can hold dozens of buddies across your roster and scout new ones from the Buddy Board. Each scouted Palamute comes with a name already, so you only need to name the one you create at the start and any you decide to rename. Many hunters keep a themed set, for example monster names for every Palamute and cat puns for every Palico.

Are there name restrictions for buddies in Rise?

The game limits buddy names to a short character count and filters profanity and some symbols, so keep to letters and spaces. All the names in this generator are short enough to fit and avoid filtered terms, but you may still need to trim a two-word title like Commander Woof if the field rejects it.
