About Pacific Northwest town names
Pacific Northwest town names come in layers, and a road map shows all of them at once. The oldest layer is Native: Snohomish, Puyallup, Enumclaw, Yachats and Nehalem come from the languages of the people who were here first. Chinook Jargon, the old trade language of the region, left words that mapmakers kept using, among them skookum (strong), tyee (chief), tillicum, illahee and alki.
Later layers came with work and weather. Timber, cement, salmon canneries, ferries, railroads, river locks and gold strikes named towns plainly (Mill City, Concrete, Gold Bar, Cascade Locks), ship captains left ports and capes, and homesteaders added hopeful names such as Sweet Home and Sublimity. East of the Cascades the vocabulary dries out into coulees, benches, orchards and wheat sidings.
Roughly one name in six on this list is a real town in Washington or Oregon. The rest are built in the same styles: Cedar Landing, Salmon Bend, Port Madrone, Skookum Falls. No Native-sounding word is made up here. The built names use only real river and place names, plus Chinook Jargon words that real Northwest places already carry. A built name can still match a real creek, park, neighborhood or small community, so look at a map if your town has to be fictional.
How to choose Pacific Northwest town names
- Match the name to the side of the mountains: Slough, Landing, Cove and Narrows belong on the wet west side, while Coulee, Bench, Flat and Siding read as the dry country east of the Cascades.
- Let the town's first industry name it. A mill town can be as blunt as Shingle Bolt or Sawdust Flats, a fishing town as plain as Cannery Point or Coho Landing.
- Do not make up words that imitate a Native language. If you want that layer, borrow a real river (Skagit Forks, Nehalem Forks) or a Chinook Jargon word that is already on the map.
- Say the name with a ferry schedule or a highway sign in mind. 'Next sailing to Madrona Landing' and 'Tyee Harbor, 12 miles' should both sound ordinary.
- Give the town neighbors. Northwest towns cluster along one river or one shore, so pick three or four names that share a waterway.

What makes a town name sound like the Pacific Northwest?
Water and trees, mostly: sloughs, landings, narrows, capes and falls, with cedar, alder, madrona and salmon in front of them. Plain working names from mills, canneries and rail sidings do the rest. Alder Slough, Salmon Bend and Gillnet Slough would look out of place in the Midwest or New England.
Does the list cover eastern Washington and Oregon?
Yes, as a smaller share. Dry-side names such as Hopfield, Basalt Bench and Tumbleweed Siding sit beside real towns like Ellensburg, Walla Walla and Prineville. Real towns from Idaho, British Columbia and Alaska are left out so the list stays with the two states.
