About nuzlocke names

The second rule of a Nuzlocke is that every Pokemon you catch gets a nickname, and that rule is what turns a fainted Bidoof into a death in the family. Good Nuzlocke nicknames do two jobs: they make each team member feel like an individual, and they are short enough to read on the battle screen. Modern games allow 12 characters, older generations only 10, so the classics are compact: Nugget for a Torchic, Gerald for a Geodude, Yorick for anything doomed to die early.

Most players pick a theme before they set out. Food is the perennial favourite (Biscuit, Mochi, Churro), followed by Greek and Norse gods, stars and planets, spices, gemstones, Shakespeare characters, and deliberately boring human names like Jeff, Kevin and Mildred that become hilarious on a Gyarados. Veterans also name Pokemon after their role or fate in the run: Box Warmer, Meat Shield, Plan B, Crit Magnet, Whitney Bane, Last Hope. And when a starter falls, the replacement often carries a tribute name such as Vengeance, Jeff II or Memento.

The list here mixes all of those styles so you can pull a full themed team or grab one name on the fly at the route's first encounter.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Check the character limit before you commit to a theme: 12 characters in current games, 10 in Gen 1 through 5. Marshmallow fits, Snickerdoodle does not.
  • Pick one naming theme per run (food, gods, spices, old-timey names) so the team feels like a set, and keep a short backup list for surprise encounters.
  • Name by role when the joke writes itself: the sturdy Geodude is Meat Shield, the Magikarp you box immediately is Box Warmer, the third catch on Route 3 is Plan B.
  • When a team member dies, keep the name alive. Pass it on with a II or Jr, or give the replacement a tribute name like Vengeance, Requiem or Memento.
  • Lean into the Pokemon's type or look for a quick pun: Cinder for a Fire starter, Pebble for a Rock-type, Yorick for a Ghost, Gerald for anything that looks like it pays taxes.

Frequently asked questions

Why do you have to nickname Pokemon in a Nuzlocke?

It is one of the two core rules, alongside releasing any Pokemon that faints. Nicknames force you to get attached, which is the whole point of the challenge; losing 'Nugget' hurts in a way losing 'Torchic' never does.

How long can a Nuzlocke nickname be?

Twelve characters in Gen 6 onward (X and Y through Scarlet and Violet, including Legends Arceus), and ten in Gen 1 through 5. Spaces count, so 'Crit Magnet' is 11 and only works in newer games.

What are the most popular Nuzlocke naming themes?

Food and snacks, Greek and Norse mythology, stars and planets, gemstones and colours, spices and herbs, Shakespeare characters, and deliberately mundane human names. Many players also name Pokemon after their job in the run, like Wall, Sweeper, Pivot or Sacrifice.

What should I name a Pokemon that replaces a dead team member?

Common choices are the old name with II or Jr, a tribute word like Vengeance, Avenger, Memento or Requiem, or a name from the same theme as the fallen one so the slot keeps its identity. Some players name the replacement after the Pokemon that caused the death as a reminder.
