1,000 Norwegian names for houses, villas and cabins, each with a short English meaning in brackets: Solbakken (the sunny hill), Fredheim (home of peace), Havblikk (sea view), Kveldsro (evening rest), Rypebu (ptarmigan hut). Sun, tree, sea, mountain, season, compass, farm and cabin names are all in the list.

About Norwegian house names

A Norwegian house name is usually one compound word: something about the place first, then a word for the home or the ground it stands on. Sol (sun), gran (spruce), fjell (mountain), hav (sea) and fred (peace) are joined to endings such as heim (home), ly (shelter), li (hillside), bo (dwelling), bu (hut), tun (farmyard), vang (meadow) and haug (mound). Solheim is the sun home, Granly a shelter among spruces, Fjellro mountain calm.

The word "the" is an ending in Norwegian, not a separate word. Utsikten is the view, Hytta the cabin, Naustet the boathouse, and Bakken is simply the hill. The letters æ, ø and å are letters in their own right and belong on the sign: Sjøgløtt, Bjørkely, Åsly.

The list covers sun and light names, trees, the sea and the fjord, mountains and valleys, names of peace, rest and happiness, seasons and times of day, compass names, Villa forms, cabin names in bu, stua, hytta and koia, old farm buildings and summer pastures, flowers and berries, rivers and lakes, birds and weather. Bokmål spelling is the default, with a few Nynorsk and regional words marked as such. Many of these compounds are also farm names and surnames. Each entry has a short literal meaning in brackets.

How to choose Norwegian house names

  • Choose a name that is true of the place. Havblikk suits a house that really sees the sea, Elvebakken one on a riverbank, Furuly one sheltered by pines, and Gamleskolen only a building that was once a school.
  • Keep the endings apart, because they are easy to confuse: ly is shelter and li is a hillside, bo is a dwelling and bu is a hut. Granly and Granli are two different names.
  • Copy the spelling letter for letter, with æ, ø and å. Sjøgløtt written as Sjoglott or Sjoegloett is no longer the same word to a Norwegian reader.
  • Match the name to the building. Names in bu, hytta and koia belong on a cabin, Villa forms on a detached house with a garden, and seter and støl names on a hut in the summer pastures.
  • Say the name aloud and show it to a Norwegian speaker before a sign is painted. We have not checked whether a neighbor already uses your choice.

Frequently asked questions

What do Norwegian house names mean?

Most of them describe where the house stands or the feeling its owners want from it. Solbakken is "the sunny hill", Granli is "spruce hillside", Havblikk is "sea view", Fredheim is "home of peace" and Kveldsro is "evening rest". Every name in the list has a short literal meaning in brackets after it.

What is the difference between heim, ly, li, bo and bu?

Heim is a home (hjem is the everyday Bokmål word, heim the form most often seen in names), ly is shelter, li is a hillside, bo is a dwelling and bu is a small hut. That is why Bjørkely is a shelter among birches, Bjørkeli a birch hillside, Lykkebo a happy dwelling and Rypebu a ptarmigan hut.

What are typical names for a Norwegian cabin?

Cabin names tend to be shorter and more playful than house names. Many end in bu, stua, hytta or koia and name an animal or a bird, such as Rypebu, Elgbu, Rypestua or Tømmerkoia, while others are about rest: Fjellro, Hyttekos, Krypinn. In the mountains you also meet seter names and, in western Norway, støl names, both words for a summer pasture farm.

Can I use one of these names for my own house?

Yes, the choice of a name for a sign by the door is yours. The list was drafted from the common stock of Norwegian house, cabin and farm names, and we cannot vouch for every form or gloss, so ask a Norwegian speaker to confirm the spelling before you order a sign. Pick a name that fits the place, such as Sjøgløtt for a glimpse of water or Skogly at the edge of a forest.
