Generate names that sound at home in Natlan: the canon Pyro nation cast from Mavuika to Citlali, plus hundreds of original names built from the Nahuatl, Maya, Quechua, Polynesian and West African roots HoYoverse drew on, for Genshin Impact OCs, fan fiction and roleplay.
About natlan names
Natlan is Genshin Impact's nation of war and the Pyro Archon, and unlike Liyue or Inazuma it does not borrow from a single culture. HoYoverse built its cast from a deliberate blend of Indigenous American, Polynesian and African sources: Xilonen and Citlali are Nahuatl, Kinich comes from the Maya sun title K'inich, Chasca is the Quechua word for Venus, Mualani and Mavuika are Hawaiian and Maori, and Iansan and Ifa are Yoruba. Characters go by a single given name, usually two to four syllables, with hard consonant clusters (tl, tz, x pronounced sh, k') sitting next to open, vowel-heavy Polynesian shapes.
The six tribes each pull their look and sound from a different root. The Children of Echoes of Tezcatepetonco and the Scions of the Canopy of Huitztlan lean Mesoamerican, the People of the Springs at Meztli feel Polynesian, the Flower-Feather Clan of Tlalocan reads Andean, and the Masters of the Night-Wind in Ochkanatlan mix Nahuatl with a shamanic, nocturnal register. Saurian companions and wayob spirits get their own names, and legendary heroes like Xbalanque are lifted straight from the Popol Vuh.
This list mixes the canon roster with original names from each of those language families, plus tribe settlements, saurian species and a few divine names for worldbuilding.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide the tribe first and pick a root to match: Nahuatl or Maya names for Children of Echoes and Scions of the Canopy, Hawaiian or Maori for People of the Springs, Quechua for Flower-Feather Clan, and Yoruba or Swahili if your OC comes from the Collective of Plenty or the Night-Wind.
- Keep to a single given name. Natlan characters never use surnames, so instead identify your OC by tribe, saurian companion or a title earned in the Pilgrimage.
- Watch pronunciation: in Nahuatl-style names the x is a sh sound (Xilonen is Shee-lo-nen) and tl is one consonant, so a name like Tlalli or Xochitl reads more authentically than a respelling such as Shochitl.
- Name the saurian too. Canon pairs a short companion name (Ajaw) with the species (Yumkasaur, Koholasaur, Tepetlisaur), so a warrior named Nahil with a Qucusaur called Pillku feels instantly native to the setting.
- Avoid lifting the names of real Aztec emperors or living people. Gods and Popol Vuh heroes are fair game for legendary ancestors, but an OC called Moctezuma will read as a history lesson rather than a Natlan character.
Frequently asked questions
What cultures are Natlan names based on?
Natlan draws on several: Nahuatl (Aztec) and Maya for Xilonen, Citlali and Kinich, Quechua for Chasca, Hawaiian and Maori for Mualani and Mavuika, Hopi for Kachina, and Yoruba for Iansan and Ifa. The tribes each favor a different family, which is why the nation sounds so varied.
Do Natlan characters have last names?
No. Every playable Natlan character and almost every NPC goes by one name. If you want your OC to feel grounded, attach a tribe (Scions of the Canopy, People of the Springs) or a saurian companion rather than inventing a surname.
What should I name my OC's saurian?
Canon keeps saurian names short and punchy, like Kinich's Ajaw. Short Maya, Quechua or Polynesian words work well: Balam, Tok, Puma, Nalu or Koa all fit. Match the species to the tribe: Yumkasaurs for the Canopy, Koholasaurs for the Springs, Tepetlisaurs for the Children of Echoes, Qucusaurs for the Flower-Feather Clan, Iktomisaurs for the Night-Wind and Tatankasaurs for the Collective of Plenty.
Can I use canon Natlan names for an OC?
The original names in this list are free to use anywhere. Canon names such as Mavuika, Kinich or Mualani belong to HoYoverse's characters, so treat them as style references or use them for fan works about those characters rather than naming a new OC after them.
