About genshin oc names

Genshin Impact names are region-coded, and a convincing OC name starts by matching the nation. Mondstadt uses German and broadly European names (Diluc, Jean, Kaeya, Albedo, Eula, Klee, Rosaria), with a few Latin alchemical touches. Liyue characters carry two-syllable Chinese pinyin names (Zhongli, Xingqiu, Ganyu, Keqing, Xiangling), sometimes with a family name attached like Hu Tao or Yun Jin. Inazuma follows Japanese conventions with the clan name first for nobility (Kamisato Ayaka, Kujou Sara, Arataki Itto) and given names alone for commoners.

Sumeru blends Persian, Arabic and Indian names (Nilou, Cyno, Kaveh, Dehya, Nahida, Alhaitham), Fontaine is French through and through (Neuvillette, Furina, Lyney, Chevreuse, Clorinde), Natlan draws on Nahuatl, Quechua, Hawaiian and African names (Kachina, Xilonen, Citlali, Mualani, Kinich), and Snezhnaya, home of the Fatui, is Russian and Italian in flavour (Childe as Tartaglia, Columbina, Pantalone, Arlecchino, all Commedia dell'arte masks). Archons and adepti stand apart with mythological or Latin names like Barbatos, Morax, Zhongli's guises and Xiao.

The list below is grouped by nation in that order and made almost entirely of names not yet used in the game, so your Vision holder, Fatui Harbinger, adeptus or Akademiya scholar fits Teyvat without colliding with a canon character.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick the nation first, then the name; a French name on a Liyue OC breaks immersion faster than any lore mistake.
  • Inazuman nobles use clan name then given name (Kamisato Reiya), while Liyue names are usually two syllables with no surname unless the family matters to the story.
  • Fatui Harbingers take Commedia dell'arte stage names (Tartaglia, Arlecchino, Pantalone), so a Harbinger OC needs a mask name plus a real Snezhnayan birth name.
  • Give the name a small tie to the element or Vision: Fuyuki (winter) for a Cryo user, Azar (fire) for Pyro, Xochitl (flower) for Dendro.
  • Check that the name is not already a minor NPC or weapon; the Genshin wiki has a full character list you can search in seconds.

Frequently asked questions

What real cultures are the Genshin nations based on?

Mondstadt is Germanic and Central European, Liyue is China, Inazuma is Japan, Sumeru is Persian, Arabic and South Asian, Fontaine is France, Natlan draws on Mesoamerican, Andean, Polynesian and African cultures, and Snezhnaya is Russia with Italian Commedia dell'arte names for the Fatui Harbingers.

Do Genshin characters have last names?

Only some. Inazuman nobles use clan names (Kamisato, Kujou, Kaedehara), a few Liyue characters have family names (Hu Tao, Yun Jin), and Mondstadt has surnames like Ragnvindr, Gunnhildr and Lawrence. Most other characters go by a single name.

How do I name a Genshin OC who is a Fatui Harbinger?

Harbingers use titles from Commedia dell'arte: Tartaglia, Arlecchino, Pantalone, Columbina, Sandrone, Dottore, Capitano, Pierro, Signora, Pulcinella, Scaramouche. Give your OC one of the unused mask names or a new Commedia character, plus a Russian-style birth name.

Can I use these names for Genshin fan fiction and OCs?

Yes. These are real-world names in the styles Genshin uses, so they are free to use for OCs, fan fiction, art and roleplay. Canon names like Barbatos or the Harbinger titles belong to HoYoverse.
