Moroccan family names, from Fez to the Sous
500 Moroccan family names in the spellings used on Moroccan papers, from Bennani, Alaoui and Filali to Ait Lahcen, Akhannouch and Azoulay.
About Moroccan last names
Most Moroccan families took a fixed surname only in the 20th century, when the civil registry asked every household to choose one. Before that, a person was known by a given name, a father's name and often a word for where the family came from. The names here are written the way Moroccans write them on their papers, in French-style spelling, with ou for the u or w sound and ch for sh.
Several kinds sit side by side. Old city families of Fez, Rabat, Salé and Tetouan carry names such as Bennani, Benjelloun, Tazi and Bargach. A nisba ends in i and points to a town, region or tribe: Filali for the Tafilalt, Soussi for the Sous, Slaoui for Salé, Doukkali for Doukkala. Ben means son of and Bou means father of, as in Bensouda and Bouzid. Amazigh names often start with Ait, people of, or Ou, son of, as in Ait Lahcen and Ouhammou. Moroccan Jewish families carry names such as Azoulay, Ohana and Toledano.
Some names are tied by tradition to a lineage, such as Alaoui and Idrissi, but a surname alone proves nothing about ancestry, faith or rank. Double names like Fassi Fihri mark a branch of a larger family. Every entry is one family name with no given name attached.
How to choose Moroccan last names
- Match the name to a region. Filali suits a family from the Tafilalt oases, Soussi or an Ait name suits the Sous and the Atlas, and Temsamani or Ouriaghli points to the Rif.
- Keep the spelling as given. Moroccan names use French-style romanization, so a character with Moroccan papers is Cherkaoui and Ouazzani, not Sharqawi and Wazzani.
- Put the given name first. Moroccans write Youssef Bennani or Salma Ait Taleb, with the family name last.
- Treat El, Ait, Ben and Bou as part of the surname. El Idrissi and Idrissi are registered as two different names, and Ait Baha needs both of its words.
- For a real person's family history, ask the family. A name like Alaoui or Filali is shared by many households that are not related to each other.
Frequently asked questions
What are some well-known Moroccan last names?
Names you will meet across Morocco include Alaoui, Idrissi, Bennani, Tazi, Filali, Cherkaoui and Amrani. The list does not rank them, because we have no reliable count for each name. It mixes widespread names with regional ones such as Baamrani and Ouriaghli.
What do Ben, Bou, El and Ait mean in Moroccan surnames?
Ben comes from the Arabic for son of, and Bou from the word for father, often in the sense of the one with. El is the Arabic article, the. Ait is Tamazight for people of, and it opens many Amazigh family names such as Ait Hammou and Ait Mansour.
Why are Moroccan surnames spelled the French way?
Most Latin-script spellings were set down in French-language records, so they follow French sound values. That is why the list has Ouazzani, Chraibi and Guessous where an English transliteration would use other letters. Families keep these spellings on passports and ID cards.
Does a Moroccan surname show where a family comes from?
Sometimes it gives a hint. A nisba such as Doukkali, Meknassi or Sijilmassi names a place, and Ait names are Amazigh in form. It is only a hint: families moved, many names were chosen at registration, and no surname proves ancestry, descent or religion.
