Moon God Name Generator
Lunar gods, titles and epithets for any pantheon
Generate names for male and neutral moon deities: real lunar gods such as Sin, Khonsu, Tsukuyomi and Máni beside original names like Ilvareth of the Silver Horn, Old Father Tide-Puller and Lord of the Thirteenth Month. Made for pantheons, clerics, worldbuilding and stories.
About moon god names
The moon is not always a goddess. In ancient Mesopotamia it was Sin, called Nanna in Sumerian, whose great temples stood at Ur and Harran. Egypt had Khonsu, son of Amun and Mut at Thebes, and the lesser-known Iah. Japan has Tsukuyomi, brother of the sun goddess Amaterasu, the Norse had Máni, brother of Sól, and Hindu tradition honors Chandra, who is still worshipped today among the Navagraha. Men in Phrygia, Mēness in Latvia, Yarikh at Ugarit and Tecciztecatl among the Aztecs belong to the same company. Thoth appears here too, though he is a god of writing and reckoning with lunar ties rather than simply the moon god.
Male moon gods tend to share a few jobs. They carry the crescent as horns or a boat, count the nights that make a month, watch over travelers after dark and pull the tides.
This list has 1,000 names. A small share are attested gods with plain labels such as Nanna of Ur and Khonsu of Thebes. The rest are original: short pantheon names (Keth, Tolm), full styles like Ilvareth of the Silver Horn and Meneth Crescent-Crowned, folk names like Old Father Tide-Puller, and titles such as Lord of the Thirteenth Month or He Who Wanes.
How to choose moon god names
- Pick the god's job first: timekeeper, tide-puller, night watchman, hunter or dark-moon god. A title such as Keeper of the Thirteenth Month tells worshippers more than a sound alone.
- Give one god several names, as real cults did: the Mesopotamian moon god was Nanna, Suen and Dilimbabbar at once. Pair a short name (Vael) with a formal style (Ilvareth of the Silver Horn) and a folk name villagers would say (Old Father Lantern).
- Decide how he stands to the sun. Brother, rival or pursuer each suggests a different epithet, from Brother of the Sun to The Veiled Brother.
- For a pantheon chart, use the short names and keep their sound close to the sun and star gods who sit beside him.
- Treat living faith with respect. Chandra is worshipped today, so keep him out of jokes and villain roles and pick an original name for those instead.
Frequently asked questions
Which real moon gods are in the list?
Sin and Nanna from Mesopotamia, Khonsu and Iah from Egypt, Tsukuyomi from Japan, Máni from Norse myth, Chandra and Soma from Hindu tradition, Men from Phrygia, Mēness from Latvia, Yarikh from Ugarit, Tecciztecatl from the Aztecs, Igaluk from Inuit tradition and the moon men Bahloo, Ngalindi and Japara from Aboriginal Australian stories, among others. They are a small share of the 1,000 names, and labels such as Sin of Harran or Aglibol of Palmyra say where a god was worshipped.
Is Thoth a moon god?
Not simply. Thoth is the Egyptian god of writing, knowledge and reckoning, and he has strong lunar ties, which is why he is often shown with a moon disc and crescent on his head. Egypt's moon gods in the narrower sense are Khonsu and Iah, so the list labels him Thoth, Reckoner of Time.
Why are there no goddesses here?
Moon goddesses have a page of their own, the Moon Goddess Name Generator. This page keeps to male and neutral names: gods, lords, fathers and kings, plus titles such as The Changing One or The Hidden Face that fit a deity of any kind.
Can I use these names for a D&D pantheon or a novel?
Yes. The original names are in the style of myth, made for your own worlds, clerics and temples. We have not checked them against published game settings, so search a name before you print it. The attested gods belong to real mythologies and religions, so use them with care.
