Clan names and patronymics Mongolians really carry
Get Mongolian last names the way Mongolians really carry them: clan names such as Borjigin, Olkhonud and Uriankhai, and patronymics such as Batbayaryn, Ganbaataryn and Dorjiin.
About Mongolian last names
Mongolia does not hand down surnames the Western way, so a list of Mongolian last names has to show what people really carry. A Mongolian is known by a given name. In front of it stands a patronymic: the father's name, or sometimes the mother's, in the genitive case. Dorjiin Bat is Bat, child of Dorj, and Bat's own children will carry Batyn instead. The name in front changes with every generation.
The second kind of name is the ovog, the clan name. Clan names fell out of official use in the socialist period and came back on identity papers from the 1990s on, when citizens were asked to register one. Many families chose an old clan such as Borjigin, Besud, Olkhonud or Khatagin, and some picked a new word altogether.
This list mixes both kinds. About a sixth are clan and tribal names from Mongolian history, including Oirat and Buryat ones such as Torguud and Khori. The rest are patronymics built from given names in everyday use, with the ending the grammar asks for: Ganbaataryn, Sükhiin, Davaagiin, Batsaikhany, Namsrain. Spellings follow the usual romanization of Mongolian Cyrillic, with ö and ü kept.
How to choose Mongolian last names
- For a present-day character, put a patronymic in front of the given name: Ganbaataryn Bat reads as Bat, child of Ganbaatar. Siblings share a patronymic, parents and children do not.
- Use a clan name where a form wants a family name that stays the same, or for a story set in earlier centuries, when the clan mattered more than any written surname.
- Every patronymic here already has its genitive ending, so copy it as written. Roughly, names with a, o or u take -yn, names with e, ö or ü take -iin, names ending in j, ch, sh or g take -iin whatever their vowels (Dorjiin, Dashiin), a long final vowel takes -giin, and names ending in n take -y, -ii or -giin.
- In Mongolia the patronymic is often cut to an initial in front of the given name, as in D. Bat. Abroad, many Mongolians write the parent's name without its ending as a last name. Either works for a character.
- A clan name does not prove descent. Many families registered Borjigin without any record of the line, so do not let one name carry a character's whole backstory.
Frequently asked questions
Do Mongolians have last names?
Not inherited family names in the Western sense. A person carries a given name, a patronymic made from a parent's name, and a registered clan name, the ovog. On a passport the patronymic usually fills the surname field, which is why this page lists both kinds.
What do the endings -yn, -iin and -giin mean?
They mark the genitive case, the Mongolian way of saying "of". Batbayaryn means "of Batbayar", Dorjiin means "of Dorj" and Davaagiin means "of Davaa". Which ending a name takes depends on its vowels and its last sound.
Why do so many Mongolians have the clan name Borjigin?
Borjigin is the clan of Chinggis Khaan. When clan names returned to identity papers, many families who had lost track of their own clan chose it, so the name says little about descent today. Other old clans in the list include Besud, Taichiud, Jalair and Uriankhai.
Which names fit a historical or fantasy steppe setting?
Reach for the clan names, such as Khongirad, Naiman or Mergid, because clan identity mattered most in earlier centuries. For a present-day Mongolian, pair a patronymic such as Enkhbayaryn or Sükhbaataryn with a given name instead.
