About medieval girl names
Medieval girl names are not the Tudor names most people picture. Before about 1500, the commonest English names for girls were Alice, Agnes, Matilda (usually written Maud), Joan, Margery, Cecily, Isabel and Emma, followed by a long tail of names that have since vanished: Hawise, Petronilla, Amice, Avice, Idonea, Lettice, Rohese, Wymarc, Sibyl and Clemence. Most arrived with the Normans; the older Anglo-Saxon names such as Eadgyth, Ælfgifu, Godgifu and Wulfwynn survived among peasant families for a century or two after 1066 before fading out.
On the Continent the pool differs by region. French records give Aliénor, Mahaut, Ermengarde, Isabeau and Jehanne; German ones Adelheid, Kunigunde, Mechthild and Hildegard; Italian ones Fiammetta, Ginevra, Costanza and Piccarda; Spanish ones Urraca, Sancha and Berenguela; Scandinavian ones Gunnhild, Thorhild and Ragnhild; Welsh and Irish ones Gwenllian, Angharad, Gormlaith and Derbforgaill. Women rarely had fixed surnames: they were recorded as the daughter or wife of someone, by where they lived (atte Well, de Lacy), by trade (Webster, Brewster) or by a nickname (le Blake, la Rousse).
The list below pairs given names with bynames in that style, keeps original medieval spellings, and finishes with a run of bare given names for when you only need the first name.
Tips for choosing a name
- For an ordinary English girl between 1100 and 1400, pick from the top names (Alice, Agnes, Maud, Joan, Margery, Cecily) and save rarities like Orabilis or Amphelisa for a character who is meant to stand out.
- Match the byname to social class: de plus a place name (de Lacy, de Vere) reads as gentry or nobility, while atte Mill, Webster or Fitzwalter reads as townsfolk, craftspeople or lesser landholders.
- Use the period spelling on the page (Hawise, Alys, Margery, Petronilla) rather than a modern form if you want the name to feel dated; readers register Maud and Matilda as very different eras.
- Anglo-Saxon names with Æ, ð or th clusters (Æthelflæd, Ealdgyth) suit pre-Conquest settings and early Norman peasants; after about 1200 they would mark a character as old-fashioned.
- If the name is for a baby rather than a character, check how the short form sounds: Hawise, Avice and Idonea are lovely on paper but Lettice, Wymarc and Custance invite teasing.
Frequently asked questions
What were the most common medieval girl names?
In England between roughly 1200 and 1500 the leaders were Alice, Agnes, Matilda (Maud), Joan, Margery, Cecily, Isabel, Emma, Elizabeth and Katherine. Before the Conquest, names like Eadgyth (Edith), Ælfgifu, Godgifu and Wulfwynn dominated. In France the equivalents were Jehanne, Marguerite, Marie, Alis, Isabel and Agnès; in Germany, Adelheid, Mechthild, Gertrud and Kunigunde.
Did medieval girls have last names?
Usually not in the modern hereditary sense. A woman in a court roll or tax list would be written as Alice daughter of William, Maud atte Well (by the well), Cecily Webster (a weaver), or Hawise de Lacy (of the Lacy family or the place Lassy). Noblewomen used their father's or husband's family name; hereditary surnames only became normal for everyone in the 14th and 15th centuries.
Are these names accurate for the whole Middle Ages?
They span roughly 800 to 1500 and several countries, so not every name fits every setting. Anglo-Saxon and Norse names belong to the early Middle Ages, Anglo-Norman names like Hawise and Petronilla to about 1100 to 1350, and names like Tiffany, Dowsabel and Fiammetta to the later medieval period. The intro and tips note which names suit which era.
Can I use these as modern baby names?
Many medieval names are back in use: Matilda, Eleanor, Beatrix, Cecily, Isolde, Rosamund, Margery and Clemence all work today. Others like Hawise, Idonea, Amice and Sibyl are rare but pronounceable. Anglo-Saxon names with Æ (Æthelflæd) and Irish or Welsh names with unfamiliar spellings (Derbforgaill, Gwenllian) will need constant explanation, so consider an anglicised form.
