In England between roughly 1200 and 1500 the leaders were Alice, Agnes, Matilda (Maud), Joan, Margery, Cecily, Isabel, Emma, Elizabeth and Katherine. Before the Conquest, names like Eadgyth (Edith), Ælfgifu, Godgifu and Wulfwynn dominated. In France the equivalents were Jehanne, Marguerite, Marie, Alis, Isabel and Agnès; in Germany, Adelheid, Mechthild, Gertrud and Kunigunde.

Usually not in the modern hereditary sense. A woman in a court roll or tax list would be written as Alice daughter of William, Maud atte Well (by the well), Cecily Webster (a weaver), or Hawise de Lacy (of the Lacy family or the place Lassy). Noblewomen used their father's or husband's family name; hereditary surnames only became normal for everyone in the 14th and 15th centuries.
