Generate medieval female names drawn from real records of the Middle Ages: Anglo-Norman, Old English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Norse, Welsh and Irish women's names with period-correct bynames, surnames and patronymics. Perfect for historical fiction, D&D characters, reenactment personas and fantasy worldbuilding.

About medieval female names

Medieval women's names were far more varied than the Matilda-and-Eleanor shortlist most people picture. In England alone, records from the twelfth to fifteenth centuries show Hawise, Avice, Idonea, Lettice, Petronilla, Wymarc, Sibyl and Amice alongside the familiar Joan and Alice, while Old English names like Aldith, Godiva and Wulfrun survived in the countryside long after the Norman Conquest. Across the Channel, France had Aalis, Isabeau, Mahaut and Esclarmonde; German lands had Adelheid, Mechthild and Kunigunde; Italy had Fiordelisa, Isotta and Lapa; Spain had Urraca, Sancha and Mencía.

The second half of the name matters just as much. Medieval women rarely carried a fixed surname. They were known by a place (Helewise of Thaxted), a father or husband (Edith Godwinsdaughter, Ragnhild Sigurdsdóttir, Gwenllian ferch Gruffudd), a trade (Margery Fletcher, Gode Alewife) or a noble house (Isabeau de Coucy, Adelheid von Ravensburg). Welsh and Irish names used ferch and ingen or Ní for daughter of; Norse names used dóttir.

This generator pairs period given names with period-correct bynames for each culture, so you can pick a peasant, townswoman, nun, noblewoman or queen and have her name sound like it came out of a manor roll rather than a fantasy novel.

How to choose medieval female names

  • Match the byname to her station: of a place or a trade for commoners and townswomen, de, von or ferch for gentry and nobility, and a saint-like dedication (of Ely, of Wilton) for nuns and abbesses.
  • Check the century. Old English names like Aldith and Godgifu fit before about 1200; Norman imports like Matilda, Hawise and Petronilla dominate the 1100s to 1300s; by the 1400s Joan, Agnes, Alice, Margaret and Elizabeth account for most English girls.
  • Medieval spelling was flexible. Isabel, Isabella, Ysabel and Isabeau are the same name, so choose the spelling that fits the region and the look of your text, and stay consistent within one story.
  • Give her a nickname that would have been used in daily life. Maud for Matilda, Sely for Cecily, Magota for Margaret, Ibb for Isabel and Jehannette for Jehanne add realism to dialogue.
  • For fantasy settings, borrow the structure rather than the exact names: a given name plus a place, trade or father's name will make an invented culture feel grounded.

Frequently asked questions

What were common female names in medieval times?

In England the most common were Alice, Agnes, Joan, Matilda (Maud), Margery, Isabel, Emma, Cecily and Juliana, with rarer records of Avice, Hawise, Idonea, Lettice and Petronilla. France favored Jeanne, Marie, Aalis, Marguerite and Isabeau; Germany favored Adelheid, Gertrud, Mechthild and Hedwig; Italy favored Caterina, Giovanna, Francesca and Lucia.

Did medieval women have surnames?

Usually not in the fixed, inherited sense. A woman was identified by her birthplace (Goda of Ely), her father or husband (Edith Godwinsdaughter), her occupation (Margery Fletcher) or her family's estate (Rohese de Vere). Inherited surnames only became standard for ordinary people in the late Middle Ages, and many of the names here reflect the earlier, descriptive style.

Are these names historically accurate?

The given names are all attested in medieval records, chronicles, saints' lives or literature, and the bynames follow documented patterns for each culture. Some entries are famous historical women, included as authentic examples; most are plausible combinations that would pass in a manor roll, charter or chronicle but do not belong to a specific person.

Can I use these for a D&D or fantasy character?

Yes. Medieval names are the backbone of most fantasy settings, and names like Ysolt Dunstable, Hawise de Bolebec or Solveig Sveinsdóttir sound right for human characters in D&D, Pathfinder or historical-fantasy novels. The Welsh, Irish and Norse sections are especially useful for Celtic- and Viking-flavored cultures.
