About Marching band names

A marching band is named in layers. The band itself has a nickname, every section inside it picks one, and each season's field show gets a title. School and college band nicknames follow two traditions: an epithet tied to the place, as in The Pride of Cedar Valley or The Sound of Brightwater, or the word Marching in front of the mascot, as in Marching Ospreys. The places and mascots in this list are invented or generic, so put your own town and mascot in their place.

Competitive groups in the drum and bugle corps style usually prefer one strong word, such as Lodestone, Clarion or Bellwether. Winter guards, the indoor color guard teams that compete in gyms after football season, name themselves the same way with a softer vocabulary: Gossamer, Aureole, Frostline Winter Guard.   • A section name should make sense to a new freshman in five seconds. Third Valve Society and Reed It and Weep explain themselves, while a joke only three seniors understand will not last past graduation.
