Jazz band names have a few distinct traditions, and the best ones pick a lane. The oldest is the bandleader format: a name followed by the size of the group, as in the Ellis Marlow Quintet or Della Graves and the Nightflies. It tells a booker exactly what they are getting, and the swing era that made it standard also gave us the orchestras, syncopators, stompers and hot clubs that still sound right on a 1930s-style dance band.

Small groups from the bebop era onward went for mood and wit. Think colours and times of night (blue, indigo, midnight, velvet, smoke), drinks and clubs (highball, speakeasy, basement), and inside jokes only musicians get: flat fives, tritone substitutes, ghost notes, turnarounds. A pun on theory or a lyric from a standard signals that the band knows the repertoire, while something like Neon Static or Oblique Circle signals a modern, electric or fusion direction.

The practical test is whether it reads well on a chalkboard outside a club and on a festival programme next to thirty other acts. Two or three words is ideal, the suffix (trio, quartet, collective, brass band) can be dropped as the lineup changes, and it should be easy to say after two drinks. Check that nobody local is already gigging under it before you print posters.
