About magic item names

Magic item names in tabletop games follow a small number of reliable patterns, and knowing them lets you invent loot that sounds like it belongs in a rulebook. The Dungeon Master's Guide formula is item plus 'of' plus a property or image: Boots of Elvenkind, Wand of Fireballs, Cloak of Displacement. Legendary and sentient items usually drop the formula and take a proper name (Blackrazor, Wave, Whelm) or a possessive tied to a creator (Daern's Instant Fortress, Heward's Handy Haversack), which is why an invented wizard's name in front of an item instantly makes it feel older and rarer.

The best names hint at the effect without spelling it out. 'Ring of Quiet Steps' tells a player what to expect; 'Lantern of Patient Ghosts' invites them to find out. Common and uncommon items read well with plain, practical phrasing, while rare and very rare items earn a definite article and a little mystery: The Weeping Chalice, The Unsleeping Compass. Cursed or trickster items often work best as short sentences, such as 'Shield That Apologizes'.

  • Match the name to rarity: plain 'Item of Effect' names suit common and uncommon loot, while a definite article or a creator's name (The Pale Diadem, Maelric's Unfailing Compass) signals rare, legendary or sentient items.
  • Let the name foreshadow a mechanic or a story hook. A 'Key of Uncertain Doors' begs to be tried on every lock, and players will remember it long after a generic +1 dagger.
  • Mundane objects make memorable magic items. A thimble, spoon or kettle with a small wonder attached feels more real than yet another enchanted sword, and is perfect for low-level play.
  • For cursed items, keep the name pleasant or neutral so the drawback is a surprise; for obviously dangerous relics, let the name warn them (The Book That Bleeds Ink).
  • Avoid copying famous published items (Vorpal Sword, Bag of Holding) for your own creations; borrow the structure, not the name, so your loot stays distinct and legal to publish.
