A convincing Latina name depends on two things: where the woman is from and roughly when she was born. Marian and devotional names such as Guadalupe, Rosario, Socorro and Altagracia belong to grandmothers and to Catholic families; compound names like María José, Ana Lucía and Luisa Fernanda sit comfortably on women born from the 1960s through the 1990s; and today's birth registers across Mexico, Colombia and Chile are led by Valentina, Camila, Ximena, Renata and Isabella. The Spanish-speaking Caribbean adds its own flavour with Y-names like Yadira, Yaritza and Yuleisy, while Nahuatl and Maya names such as Xóchitl, Itzel, Citlali and Nicté mark a Mexican or Central American background.

Surnames are the other half of the signal. Treviño, Garza and Cantú point to northern Mexico, Irizarry and Feliciano to Puerto Rico, Mosquera and Asprilla to Colombia's Pacific coast, Quispe and Mamani to the Andes, Undurraga and Larraín to Chile, and Portuguese surnames like Oliveira and Carvalho to Brazil. Some entries carry both parental surnames, as is standard in Latin America, and some pair an English first name with a Spanish surname, as is common for U.S.-born Latinas such as Kimberly Ochoa or Destiny Zavala.
