Korean Kingdom Name Generator
Real and original realms with a Korean sound
Generate Korean-style kingdom names for sageuk fiction, manhwa, murim settings and strategy games: historical states like Goguryeo, Baekje and Balhae, original coinages such as Haeryeong and Hwaryeo, and translated names like Realm of Ten Thousand Pines.
About Korean kingdom names
Korean states have short names, usually two or three syllables written with Chinese characters: Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla (the Three Kingdoms), the Gaya confederacy beside them, Balhae in the north, then Goryeo, which gave the world the word Korea, and Joseon. History also supplies the modifiers. Hu- means later (Hubaekje is Later Baekje), dae- means great (Daegaya), buk-, dong- and nam- are north, east and south (Bukbuyeo, Dongbuyeo, Nambuyeo), and -guk marks a state, as in the small walled-town polity Saro-guk.
A small share of the 1,000 names here are those real historical states and old poetic names for the country. The rest are original. Some are coinages from Sino-Korean elements such as hae (sea), geum (gold) and wol (moon), in the mould of Haeryeong and Hwaryeo. Some use native Korean words, like Haneul Nara, the sky country. Others are English-styled or translated, from Kingdom of Cheonmu to Realm of Ten Thousand Pines.
The list also covers tribal confederacies, island and frontier kingdoms, tributary and rebel states, martial realms for murim stories, and Korean titles: wangguk (kingdom), jeguk (empire), wangjo (dynasty) and yeonmaeng (league). Everything is spelled in Revised Romanization.
How to choose Korean kingdom names
- Match the title to the age of your setting. Walled-town states ending in -guk and loose confederacies suit an early era, kingdoms suit a Three Kingdoms feel, and a dynasty or empire suits a unified country.
- Build a history with modifiers. Later, Great, Northern or Eastern turn one name into a family of successor and rival states, as in Later Hwaryeong or Northern Seolhae.
- Translate the great powers and leave the small ones in Korean. Realm of the White Crane beside Sinmo-guk reads like a real chronicle, where famous states get grand names and minor ones stay local.
- Keep one romanization. This list uses Revised Romanization (Joseon, Goguryeo), so do not mix in older spellings such as Choson or Koguryo on the same map.
- Search an invented name before you publish. A short Sino-Korean compound can coincide with a real neighborhood, temple or company, and nobody has checked these for you.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real Korean kingdoms?
A small share are. Gojoseon, Buyeo, Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla, the Gaya states, Balhae, Tamna, Goryeo and Joseon are historical, as are smaller polities such as Saro-guk and Usan. Most of the list is original: names like Haeryeong, Kingdom of Cheonmu and Geumbong Wangjo are built from Korean elements and are not historical states.
What were the Three Kingdoms of Korea?
Goguryeo in the north, Baekje in the southwest and Silla in the southeast, with the Gaya confederacy between Baekje and Silla. Silla absorbed its rivals in the seventh century while Balhae rose in the north. Goryeo and then Joseon ruled a unified country afterwards.
What do Hu-, Dae- and -guk mean in a Korean state name?
Hu- means later, dae- means great and -guk means state or country. You can see them in the real names Hubaekje, Daegaya and Mokji-guk. Wangguk is the Korean word for kingdom and jeguk for empire, which is why the list has names like Haebit Wangguk.
Can I use these names in a novel, webtoon or game?
Yes. The historical state names belong to history and appear in countless dramas and games. The original names are coinages from common Korean elements, so another writer could arrive at the same one. Search the name you like before you commit to it.
