Imperial Knights in Warhammer 40,000 carry two names: the noble who pilots the suit and the suit itself, a relic machine that may be thousands of years old. Suit names are almost always High Gothic, the dog-Latin of the Imperium, and follow a two-word noun-plus-adjective shape: Ira Dominus, Fortis Invictus, Vindicta Est, Lux Imperator. Words like ferrum (iron), ignis (fire), gladius (sword), aquila (eagle), vindex (avenger) and sanctus (holy) do most of the work. Famous canon suits show the alternatives: Canis Rex, Gallant Fury, Emperor's Hammer and the Sword of Saltire prove an English or mixed name is just as legitimate when it has weight.
Pilots are feudal aristocracy, so they take Sir, Lady, Dame, Baron or Princeps with a given name and either a family name or a House (Sir Hekhtur Cerberan, Lady Marcella of Terryn, High King Tybalt). Knight Houses are named like old noble lines rather than Space Marine chapters: Terryn, Hawkshroud, Griffith, Cadmus, Raven, Krast. Freeblades, who have left their House, usually answer to a single evocative title such as the Obsidian Knight or the Crimson Reaper, and lances (squadrons) are named for their House, their home world or their purpose.

Tips for choosing a name
- Write a Latin suit name the way Games Workshop does: two words, noun first, a sense of threat or virtue, and no need for real Latin grammar. Ira Dominus sounds right even though a classicist would wince.
- Give the pilot and the suit different registers. A Sir Aldous Kane piloting the machine Vindex Aquilae reads more 40k than a pilot and suit that share a name.
- Match the name to the chassis: Armigers and Warglaives suit short, eager names (Swiftstrike, Boldheart), Knight Paladins and Crusaders suit grand Latin, and a Dominus-class Castellan wants something that sounds like a fortress.
- Decide whether your House follows the Imperial or Mechanicus tradition first. Imperialis Houses favour chivalric English and High Gothic; Mechanicus-aligned Houses lean on harder Latin and forge-world references.
- For a Freeblade, drop the House entirely and use a title that hints at the shame or vow behind the exile: the Forsworn Knight, Shame of Hawkshroud, the Penitent of Krast.

Can I use these names for Chaos Knights or Armigers?
Armigers and Helverins are Imperial Knights, so any name here works for them; shorter names fit their smaller frames. Chaos Knights usually corrupt their old Imperial names or take new ones, so a name like Vindicta Est or Penitent Star can be twisted into a fallen version.
