Browse 461 surnames borne in Honduras, one per entry: widespread names like Hernández, López and Mejía, names that sound like home such as Zelaya, Maradiaga, Oseguera and Cálix, Garifuna surnames like Arzú and Norales, Bay Islands names like Bodden and McNab, and Arab-Honduran family names like Kattán and Handal.

About Honduran last names

A Honduran carries two surnames, the father's first and then the mother's, so each entry here is one building block of a full name such as Oseguera Mejía or Zelaya Banegas. This page lists 461 surnames by themselves, where the Honduran name generator deals full names. Hernández, López, Martínez, Rodríguez and García are among the most widespread, as they are across the region. The layer that sounds like Honduras sits just behind them: Mejía, Zelaya, Pineda, Bonilla, Funes, Lagos, Suazo, Turcios, Maradiaga, Matute, Oseguera, Banegas, Euceda, Discua and Cálix, with Zúniga usually written without the ñ.

Three groups carry a label in parentheses. Garifuna surnames such as Arzú, Norales, Lalín and Róchez belong to the Caribbean coast. Bay Islands names like Bodden, McNab, Ebanks and Kirkconnell come from the English-speaking islanders of Roatán, Utila and Guanaja. Arab-Honduran names such as Kattán, Handal and Larach arrived with families from Palestine around the turn of the twentieth century. Zelaya, Izaguirre, Lardizábal and Garmendia are Basque in origin.

The list stops at 461 on purpose. It is a selection, not a complete or ranked register: the surnames that set Honduras apart take priority, and many surnames shared with all of Latin America are left to the Hispanic and Spanish last name pages. Accents follow Honduran use.

How to choose Honduran last names

  • Give a Honduran character two surnames, the father's first and then the mother's: Oseguera Mejía, Zelaya Banegas, Maradiaga Cálix. Everyday use keeps only the first.
  • For an entry with parentheses, use the part before them. The label names a community, not a second surname.
  • Match a labeled surname to the setting: Arzú, Norales or Sambulá for a Garifuna town on the Caribbean coast, Bodden, Ebanks or McNab for Roatán, Utila or Guanaja, Kattán or Handal for a family whose grandparents came from Palestine.
  • Keep the accents and the local spelling. Cálix, Uclés, Fúnez and Tábora carry their marks, and Zúniga without the ñ sits beside Zúñiga because both are in use.
  • Do not read a person's background from one surname. Spanish surnames are carried by Honduran families of every origin, and a label is only a starting point.

Frequently asked questions

What are common Honduran last names?

Hernández, López, Martínez, Rodríguez, García, Mejía, Cruz, Flores and Reyes are among the most widespread, and all of them are in the list. Zelaya, Funes, Suazo, Turcios, Maradiaga, Banegas and Euceda are also everyday surnames in Honduras and give a name a distinctly Honduran sound.

What are Garifuna last names in Honduras?

Garifuna families of the Caribbean coast carry surnames such as Arzú, Norales, Lalín, Róchez, Güity, Bernárdez, Sambulá, Cayetano and Dolmo, and the list marks them with the label (Garifuna). Many Garifuna families also carry surnames shared with the rest of the country, such as Martínez or Castillo, so the label is given only where a surname is closely tied to the community.

Why are English and Arabic surnames in a Honduran list?

The Bay Islands of Roatán, Utila and Guanaja were settled largely by English speakers in the nineteenth century, many of them from the Cayman Islands, which is why Bodden, Ebanks, McNab, Kirkconnell and Dilbert are Honduran surnames. Kattán, Handal, Larach and Canahuati came with immigrants from Palestine from the late nineteenth century on. Both groups are marked with a label in parentheses.

How was this list put together?

The list was de-duplicated and screened for filler, and it was not compared with any civil register. It stops at 461 surnames and is a selection, not a complete or ranked list; it does not add rare Spanish surnames to reach a round number. A label is given only where a surname is closely tied to one community, and a surname never proves anyone's identity or ancestry.
