Hockey Player Name Generator

A hockey roster is a small United Nations. Twenty-three players dress on an NHL team, and on almost any night that includes prairie-town Canadians, a French-Canadian or two from Québec, American college products from Minnesota, Michigan and Massachusetts, a Swedish or Finnish defenseman, a Russian winger, and a Czech or Slovak veteran. Goaltenders, meanwhile, come from everywhere and get remembered for their names as much as their pads. Building a believable fictional team means reproducing that blend rather than making everyone sound like they came from the same junior program.

Each group has tells. Anglo-Canadian names often carry Ukrainian, Polish, German and Scottish roots from prairie settlement (Melnyk, Kohut, Wiebe, McTavish). Québécois names are French through and through (Gagnon, Lavallée, Perreault). Swedish names lean on Söderström, Kempe and Lundgren, Finnish names on -nen, -la and Finnish first names like Eeli, Konsta and Aleksander, and Russian names on -ov, -ev and -enko.

The list above is grouped roughly by nationality and finishes with goaltenders, so you can draft a full lineup: three or four Canadians per line, a European pairing on defense, and a goalie tandem from two different countries.
