Smith becomes Smitty, Jones becomes Jonesy, Sullivan becomes Sully, and by the second practice nobody uses anything else. The grander kind belongs to the stars and the broadcast booth. Maurice Richard was the Rocket, Gordie Howe was Mr. Hockey and Wayne Gretzky became the Great One. Those names belong to the players who earned them, so they are left out of this list.

What the 500 entries give you is the same tradition with nobody's name on it. There are surname cuts built on common family names (Fitzy, Walshy, Schmitty), one-word tags by role for snipers, grinders, defenders and goalies (Mitts, Mucker, Rearguard, Stonewall), announcer epithets (The Vault, The Lamplighter) and regional ones with invented pairings (The Medicine Hat Trick, The Yellowknife Yeti).
