Generate baseball nicknames in the clubhouse tradition, from The Lumberyard, High Cheese and Flyhawk to Cup of Coffee, The Kokomo Knuckler and Warning Track Jack.

About this generator

Baseball has handed out nicknames since the nineteenth century, and the famous ones are part of the game's history: Babe Ruth was the Sultan of Swat, Lou Gehrig the Iron Horse, Ted Williams the Splendid Splinter, Reggie Jackson Mr. October and Randy Johnson the Big Unit. Clubhouses added thousands of plainer ones, and nearly every left-hander who walked into a locker room has been called Lefty at least once.

This generator works in that tradition without reusing it. The famous nicknames belong to the players who earned them, so the list is made of fresh ones built the same way. There are old-time words that sportswriters once used for players (Twirler, Portsider, Clouter, Bonus Baby), epithets for sluggers and aces (The Lumberyard, The Door Slammer, The Innings Eater) and hometown epithets in the old newspaper style, such as The Kokomo Knuckler.

The rest follows what a player does. Pitchers get pitch slang (High Cheese, Yellow Hammer, Dead Fish), hitters get the vocabulary of contact (Blue Darter, Daisy Cutter, Duck Hunter), and fielders and base stealers get Snow Cone, Flashing Leather and Bag Swiper. Dugout jokes such as Cup of Coffee and Named Later, rhyming names like Warning Track Jack, and Little League and softball names round out the list.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Start with the position. A catcher can wear Tools of Ignorance or The Framer, a closer suits The Door Slammer, and the outfielder who runs everything down is a Flyhawk or a Home Run Robber.
  • Let the team do the naming. Offer two or three options in the dugout or the group chat and keep the one people start using without being asked.
  • Use the rhyming entries as templates. Foul Pole Joel and High Cheese Louise show the pattern: pair a teammate's first name with a baseball term that rhymes with it.
  • For a jersey, scorebook or lineup card, shorter is better. Tater, Cheddar, Rook and Scoop fit anywhere and are easy to shout from the bench.
  • Save the joke names for players who will laugh. The Gas Can and Golden Sombrero are funny to a friend and unkind to a kid who just struck out.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good baseball nickname?

It says how someone plays in a word or two. Pitch slang, bat slang and fielding terms do most of the work, which is why High Heat, Big Lumber and Soft Hands sound right at once. The tradition also likes a touch of humor, as in Seeing Eye Single for the hitter whose grounders always find a hole.

Does the list include real players' nicknames?

Not on purpose. Famous nicknames such as the Sultan of Swat, Mr. October and the Big Unit belong to the players who earned them, so they are left out and the list is made of fresh names in the same style. Baseball has had so many players that an overlap with a lesser-known nickname is still possible, so treat these as ideas and not as a record.

Are there nicknames for Little League and softball players?

Yes. Snack Shack, Daisy Picker, Coach's Kid and Trophy Day are meant for young players, and Rise Ball, Circle Boss, Queen of Diamonds and Ponytail Express come from softball. The list leaves out nicknames about a player's looks or background.

What are some old-time baseball nicknames?

Old newspapers had a word for every job on the field. Twirler, Hurler and Slabman meant a pitcher, a Portsider was a left-hander, a Clouter or Walloper was a slugger, and a Yannigan was a rookie. The list also borrows the hometown style of the period with entries like The Sandusky Sinker.
