About book series names

A series name does a different job from a book title. The individual titles sell one story each; the series name is the brand that ties them together, sits on every spine, and is what readers type into a search bar when they want the next one. The best ones name what stays constant across every book: the world (Discworld, Earthsea, The Expanse), the central object or conflict (The Wheel of Time, The Hunger Games), or the recurring character (the Dresden Files, the Cormoran Strike novels).

Genre sets the convention. Epic fantasy likes grand collective nouns and "X of Y" constructions: A Song of Ice and Fire, The Stormlight Archive, The Broken Earth. YA leans on one or two evocative words, often a noun pair (Shadow and Bone, Red Rising, Six of Crows). Mystery series are almost always branded by detective or setting, so "The Nell Hartigan Mysteries" or "An Inspector Bramwell Novel" tells a reader exactly what they will get. Romance brands by family or town; thrillers by protagonist; middle grade by club or crew.

A series name should be pronounceable, distinctive enough to own as a search term, and open enough that book five can still live under it. "The Ashen Crown" survives a sequel where the crown is destroyed; "The Prince of Ashmere Returns" does not.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Name the constant, not the plot. Build the series name on the world, the central object, the family or the detective, so it still fits after the first book's story is resolved.
  • Follow your genre's shelf conventions: "X of Y" and collective nouns for epic fantasy, punchy noun pairs for YA, character or place plus "Mysteries" or "Novels" for crime, family or town names for romance.
  • Keep it to five words or fewer so it fits above the title on a cover and reads cleanly as a search term on retailer sites.
  • Use the words Saga, Chronicles, Cycle and Files sparingly. They are useful signposts but they are also the most crowded labels on the shelf; a distinctive noun often works harder alone.
  • Search the exact phrase on Amazon and Goodreads before committing. Series names are rarely trademarked but you do not want to share one with a well-known run of books.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a book series name and a book title?

The series name is the umbrella brand that appears on every volume and ties them together; each book then has its own title underneath it. For example, the series is A Song of Ice and Fire and the first book is A Game of Thrones. The series name should describe what stays constant across all the books.

Should I use words like Saga, Chronicles or Trilogy in my series name?

You can, and readers understand them instantly, but they are heavily used. "Trilogy" also locks you into three books. A strong standalone name such as Mistborn or The Expanse is often more memorable, and you can always add "A Mistborn Novel" on the cover.

How do I name a mystery or detective series?

Brand it by what recurs: the detective (The Nell Hartigan Mysteries, An Inspector Bramwell Novel) or the setting (The Bakehouse Mysteries, Death in the Cotswolds). Cozy series often use a shop, hobby or village; police procedurals use the officer's name and rank.

Can I change the series name after the first book is published?

You can, but it costs you: retailers link books by series name, and readers search for it. If you are unsure, publish book one with a series name that describes the world or character rather than the first plot, so it keeps fitting as the story grows.
