About hindu god names
Hindu deities rarely go by a single name. The Vishnu Sahasranama lists a thousand for Vishnu alone, and everyday worship uses dozens more: Govinda, Keshava, Madhusudana and Janardana are the same god addressed through a different deed or quality. Shiva is Neelakantha because the poison he drank turned his throat blue, Nataraja when he dances, Pashupati as lord of creatures. Ganesha is Lambodara for his belly and Ekadanta for his single tusk. Each epithet is a descriptive Sanskrit compound, a tiny story in itself.
The pantheon also has clear families of names. Vedic devas such as Indra, Agni, Varuna and Ushas come from the earliest hymns. The Navagraha name the planets, the Navadurga name nine forms of Durga worshipped across Navratri, the ten Mahavidyas (Tara, Bhairavi, Chhinnamasta, Bagalamukhi) belong to tantric traditions, and the Dashavatara list Vishnu's incarnations from Matsya the fish to Kalki. Beneath all of that sit regional gods with deep local followings: Ayyappan in Kerala, Khandoba in Maharashtra, Mariamman in Tamil Nadu, Vaishno Devi in the north.
The list mixes every layer: canonical names for study or puja, epithets for a mantra, and plausible Sanskrit-style deities for a fantasy setting. The original names near the end use real Sanskrit roots with the Deva or Devi marker so they sit naturally beside the attested ones.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick the name that matches the aspect you mean. Shiva as Mahakala is time and destruction, as Dakshinamurti he is the silent teacher, as Bholenath the easily pleased one; the epithet does the characterisation for you.
- Use the feminine forms deliberately. Devi, Shakti and Ambika are broad titles, while Katyayani, Bhairavi or Annapurna name very specific goddesses with their own iconography and festivals.
- For fiction set in India, prefer the regional name your characters would actually use: Murugan rather than Kartikeya in Tamil Nadu, Vitthala rather than Vishnu in Pandharpur, Jagannatha in Odisha.
- If you are building an original pantheon, copy the compound logic rather than the real names: a root word plus -natha (lord), -eshwara (ruler), -priya (beloved of), -putra (son of) or -devi instantly reads as Sanskrit.
- Real deities carry living devotion. Keep canonical names respectful in games and stories; for villains or comic characters, use the clearly marked original names instead.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real Hindu gods or invented names?
The large majority are attested deities and epithets from the Vedas, Puranas, Sahasranama hymns, temple traditions and regional folk worship, including Trimurti forms, Vedic devas, Navagraha, Dashavatara, Navadurga, Mahavidyas, Ashtalakshmi and village gods like Karuppasamy or Khodiyar Mata. A small set near the end are original Sanskrit-style names, marked with Deva or Devi, intended for fantasy pantheons.
Why does the same god appear under many different names?
Hindu worship addresses a deity through epithets that describe a deed, attribute or local form. Krishna, Gopala, Giridhari, Murlidhar and Dwarkadhish are one god seen as child, cowherd, mountain-lifter, flute player and king of Dwarka. Treating each as a separate entry is useful when you want a name tied to a specific story or temple.
What is the difference between a deva and an avatar?
Devas (and devis) are gods in their own right, such as Indra, Agni or Saraswati. Avatars are descents of a god into the world, most famously the ten avatars of Vishnu: Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha and Kalki. Lists vary by tradition, and some also count Balarama, Hayagriva, Dhanvantari or Mohini.
Can I use these names for a character, pet or game?
Many Hindu god names double as ordinary given names in India (Krishna, Lakshmi, Ganesh, Karthik), so using them for a human character is completely normal. For pets, brands or comic villains, remember that names like Shiva or Durga are objects of daily worship; the original Sanskrit-style names are the safer choice for anything irreverent.
