Browse 1,000 place names of Hawaiʻi: real towns, districts, valleys, bays, peaks and islets such as Honokaʻa, Hanalei Bay, Pololū and Mokoliʻi, plus a small constructed set like Halelani and Kulaloa Uka built from the same Hawaiian place-name words.

About Hawaiian town names

Hawaiian place names are built from plain words for the land, with the describing word after the noun. Wai is fresh water, kai the sea, hale a house, mauna a mountain, puʻu a hill, pali a cliff, lae a point, moku an island or district, hono a bay, awa a harbor, one sand and kula open plain. Nui is big, iki small, loa long, kea white, ʻula red and lani sky. So Mauna Kea is white mountain, Mauna Loa long mountain and Waimea reddish water.

About nine in ten names here are real places: towns and villages of every main island, Honolulu neighborhoods and Oʻahu districts, valleys and traditional land divisions, bays and beaches, points and cliffs, peaks and craters, streams and falls, islets and far northwestern atolls, and plantation-era English names such as Captain Cook, Volcano and Pearl City.

The rest are constructed for fiction from those words: Halelani (sky house), Awaloa (long harbor), Keonekea (the white sand), and pairs such as Waikea Nui and Waikea Iki or Kulaloa Uka and Kulaloa Kai, where uka is inland and kai seaward. Words this common recombine all over the islands, so a constructed name can match a small real place. The ʻokina (ʻ) is a glottal stop and the kahakō marks a long vowel; copy both as written.

How to choose Hawaiian town names

  • Match the word to the landform: wai names suit streams and valleys, hono and awa suit bays and harbors, puʻu and mauna suit high ground, lae a point and moku an islet.
  • Name neighboring settlements as a pair, the way real land divisions are: Nui and Iki (big and small), Uka and Kai (inland and seaward), Luna and Lalo (upper and lower), Hikina and Komohana (east and west). Kalihi Uka and Kalihi Kai are real examples.
  • Copy the ʻokina and kahakō exactly. They are a letter and a length mark, not decoration, and a name without them is pronounced differently and can mean something else.
  • Add one or two plantation-era English names to a map for realism. Kurtistown, Spreckelsville, Port Allen and Mountain View sit beside Hawaiian names on the real islands.
  • For a story set in the real Hawaiʻi, keep a real name for the real place and give invented towns a constructed name such as Halekea or Palilani.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real Hawaiian towns and places?

Most are. About nine in ten names are real towns, districts and landmarks, from Honokaʻa, Hanapēpē and Kaunakakai to Pololū, Puʻu Kukui and Hanauma Bay. The rest, such as Halelani, Mokuloa and Honolani Iki, are constructed from common place-name words for fictional settings. The list is flat, so if it matters whether a name is real, look it up on a map.

What do the words in Hawaiian place names mean?

Wai is fresh water, kai is the sea, hono is a bay, awa a harbor, lae a point, pali a cliff, puʻu a hill, mauna a mountain, moku an island or district, kula open plain and one sand. Common describing words are nui (big), iki (small), loa (long), kea (white), ʻula (red) and lani (sky). Honolulu is sheltered bay and Kailua is two seas.

Does the list include Hawaiian island names?

Yes. The eight main islands are in it, along with islets such as Molokini, Mokoliʻi, Mānana and Nā Mokulua. It also has the small islands and atolls of the northwestern chain under both of their names, for example Laysan, also called Kauō, and Kure Atoll, also called Hōlanikū.

Can I use these names for a fictional town or island?

Yes, and the constructed names are meant for that: Kulaloa Uka, Awanui Wharf and Keonekea read as island places without pointing at a well-known town. Common words recombine, so look a name up on a map if you need one that no real place carries. Do not invent sacred sites or give a name a meaning you cannot back up, because Hawaiian is a living language.
