Generate creature names for Wizarding World fan fiction, roleplay and homebrew bestiaries: original beasts such as Lesser Thistle-Backed Grumlin, Hebridean Fogwing, Mossop and Loch Lurcher, plus a small share of the series' own species like Niffler and Bowtruckle.

About Harry Potter creature names

Creatures in the Harry Potter books are named from homely British words, not grand fantasy syllables. Many are a plain descriptor bolted to an odd noun (Blast-Ended Skrewt, Crumple-Horned Snorkack), a single comic coinage (Niffler, Puffskein, Bowtruckle) or, for dragons, a region and a blunt feature (Hungarian Horntail, Hebridean Black). Single beasts get either a stately compound such as Buckbeak or a pet name that undersells the danger, like Fluffy and Norbert.

About an eighth of this list is the series' own vocabulary: species, the ten dragon breeds and a few named beasts. That share includes creatures the books borrow from real folklore, such as the kelpie, grindylow, kappa, red cap, hinkypunk and boggart, which are old legends and not inventions of the series. Everything else is original and written in the same manner: one-word species (Mossop, Snibbet), descriptor compounds (Bog-Bellied Wumple), regional breeds (Cumbrian Slatehide), water and winged beasts, household pests, dangerous beasts, mock Latin labels and names for individual animals.

The originals were written for this list and are not taken from the books, films or games, and this fan-made list has no connection to the author, the publisher or the film studio. Use them for fan fiction, companions for roleplay characters and homebrew bestiaries.

How to choose Harry Potter creature names

  • Match the shape of the name to the beast: a short coinage such as Snibbet or Pobbin suits something small and common, while a full descriptor like Greater Black-Maned Mauler tells readers to keep their distance.
  • For a breed, pair a real region with one blunt physical feature, the way Cumbrian Slatehide and Orkney Stormcrest do, and let the place suggest the habitat.
  • Name an individual beast against type. A fearsome animal called Mildred or Cuddles follows the series' habit of giving monsters gentle pet names.
  • Say which creatures are your own. Names such as Niffler and Thestral belong to the series, so label originals as fan-made in anything you publish.
  • None of the original beasts carries a danger rating or classification. If your story needs one, invent it as part of your own setting.

Frequently asked questions

Are these names from the Harry Potter books?

About an eighth of the list comes from the series, mostly the books with a handful from the films and games: species such as Niffler, Bowtruckle and Hippogriff, the ten dragon breeds and a few named beasts like Buckbeak and Fawkes. The rest, including Mossop, Quillwhistle and Loch Lurcher, are original names written in the same style. They were written for this list and are not taken from the books, films or games.

Which creatures on the list come from real folklore?

The kelpie, grindylow, kappa, red cap, hinkypunk, boggart, banshee and selkie are all older than the series, which borrowed them from British, Irish and Japanese legend. The same goes for classical beasts such as the sphinx, manticore, basilisk and griffin. They sit inside the canon share because the books use them.

How do I name a creature in the Wizarding World style?

Start from ordinary English: a body part, a habit or a habitat, then add an odd noun. Thistle-Backed, Bog-Bellied and Soot-Whiskered are the kind of descriptors the list uses, attached to coinages like Grumlin and Wumple. Alliteration helps, and a mock Latin label such as Snifflus hortensis suits a textbook entry.

Can I use these names in fan fiction or a tabletop game?

Yes. The original names are meant for fan stories, roleplay and homebrew bestiaries. Canon names belong to the series, so treat anything you publish as fan work and read the rights holder's rules yourself before you sell anything.
