The four Hogwarts houses are named after their founders, and every founder's surname follows the same trick: an animal or trait welded onto an old English word for a place. The best invented house names copy that formula rather than reaching for generic fantasy words. Start with a creature (stag, kestrel, otter, wyvern), a colour or metal (amber, iron, silver), or a virtue you want the house to stand for, then finish it with a British place-name suffix such as -moor, -wick, -holme, -bourne, -shaw, -combe, -mere or -hurst. Kestrelmoor, Ottermere and Wyvernhold sound like they belong on the Great Hall banners because they are built from the same parts as the originals.

When you pick a name, decide the house's animal, colours and defining trait at the same time. A house called Frostholme almost writes its own crest (a snow owl or arctic hare, silver and blue, prizing composure), while Emberwick suggests salamanders, orange and black, and a reputation for stubborn passion.
