Gang Leader Name Generator

A gang leader is rarely called by his birth-certificate name. On the street the crew hands out the moniker, and it usually says something true: a build (Big Lito, Tiny Boone), a habit (Smoke, Dice Delgado), a reputation (Reaper Dunne, Cold Kenny) or a piece of deadpan irony (Preacher, Gentleman Jim). In a novel or script the full form does double duty, so most of the names here follow the classic three-part structure, first name, nickname in quotes, surname, the way police files and court reporters render them.

Different underworlds sound different. Italian-American crews go for food and body-part tags (Frankie "Bagels" Scaletta, Joey "Two Toes" Pastore); Irish firms favor church titles (the Bishop, the Deacon); cartel and barrio leaders use Spanish epithets (El Tigre, Flaco, Payaso); Russian bratva handles are blunt nouns (Volk, Molot); Yakuza and Triad bosses are written surname-first with no nickname at all; outlaw biker presidents carry road names (Hatchet, Diesel, Gator). A few period names in the Victorian rookery and Prohibition styles (Josiah "Gentleman" Crane, Abe "Kid Dropper" Klein) round out the list.

The best gang leader name is one the crew would actually shout across a parking lot. Keep the nickname to one or two syllables, make it sound earned rather than chosen, and let the surname anchor it to a real neighborhood.
