Funny Name Generator

Funny names come in three reliable flavors. The first is the pun name, where a first name and surname fuse into a phrase when said aloud: Paige Turner, Justin Time, Sal Monella, Warren Peace. These work because they look like ordinary names on paper and only detonate when read out, which is why they turn up in prank calls, joke sign-in sheets and Simpsons bar gags. The pun has to land on the first hearing; if a listener needs it explained, it is not funny.

The second flavor is the absurd full name: an overstuffed, old-fashioned first name wired to a surname built from food, noises or nonsense words. Bartholomew Picklesworth, Hortense Snodgrass, Algernon Flibbertigibbet. Dickens, Roald Dahl and P.G. Wodehouse are the masters here, and the rule is that it should sound almost like a real Victorian name while being just a little too much. The third flavor is the silly title: Captain Obvious, Judge Mental, Auntie Freeze, Lord Fluffington. These suit game characters, team mascots and anyone who needs to be introduced with a straight face.

Pick by audience. Pun names play to adults who will catch the wordplay; absurd names and animal nicknames are safer for kids and classrooms; silly titles work best when the character is meant to be pompous.
