Name Pun Generator

A name pun (sometimes called a punny name or a charactonym) is a first name and surname that, said aloud, sound like a common word or phrase: Justin Case, Anita Bath, Warren Peace, Paige Turner. The form has been around since Restoration comedy and Dickens, but its modern popularity comes from three sources: Bart Simpson's prank calls to Moe's Tavern (Seymour Butz, Amanda Hugginkiss, Ivana Tinkle), the Car Talk credits on NPR (Erasmus B. Dragon, Picov Andropov), and the endless lists passed around schoolyards and offices.

The mechanics are simple. Most name puns use a real, short first name that doubles as a word or sound (Justin, Anita, Al, Bea, Sue, Phil, Ray, Ty, Will) and a plausible surname spelled to complete the phrase. Middle initials add an extra syllable when needed (Nick L. Andime, Pearl E. Gates, Ted E. Bear). The best ones pass as a real person for a split second, which is what makes them work on a badge, in a hotel reservation or as a joke character.
