Funny Creature Name Generator
Silly species and harmless monsters with grand names
Generate funny creature names and funny monster names for stories, games and drawings: mock field-guide species like Greater Spotted Wobblegoose, grand titles like Lord Squeak, meek terrors like Doris the Devourer, and real animals with joke-worthy names such as the Blobfish.
About funny creature names
Funny creature names work on a mismatch. A field guide gives a silly animal a very serious label (Greater Spotted Wobblegoose, Snorfling Mudwump, Lesser Sock-Eater), a harmless fluffball gets a warlord's title (Lord Squeak, Fluffy Doom, Destroyer of Lettuce), and a terror from the deep gets the name of somebody's aunt (Doris the Devourer, Brenda from Beneath). Most funny monster names use the second or third trick, which is why more than a third of this list reads as monsters: cave things, under-the-bed things and monsters with day jobs such as Yeti Tax Accountant and Cyclops Optometrist.
The 500 names come in ten strands: invented species from swamp, forest, sea, sky and the back of the sofa, grand titles, meek monsters, mock-Latin jokes like Snoozicus Maximus (invented, not scientific names), overlong descriptions, creatures with jobs and one-word mashups such as Hippopotamouse. Two strands are not invented. There are 55 real animals whose common names already sound like jokes, among them the Blobfish, Aye-Aye, Dik-Dik, Sarcastic Fringehead and Pleasing Fungus Beetle. Another 16 are tall-tale critters of folklore, such as the Jackalope, Drop Bear, Wild Haggis, Hodag and Squonk.
The jokes are about size, manners, jobs and naps, so the list suits a classroom, a children's story or a family game night.
How to choose funny creature names
- Pick the joke before the name. A harmless creature wants a grand title (Emperor Wiggles the Unready), a frightening one wants a meek name (Snookums the Behemoth), and an ordinary one wants a field-guide label that takes it far too seriously (Reluctant Marsh Plodder).
- For a creature-collecting or taming game, short one-word names such as Wobblefang, Noodlehorn and Kangarooster fit a name field and are easy to call out. Keep the long descriptive names for picture-book titles and one-shot villains.
- In a tabletop one-shot, give the funny monster name to something with real stats. Players remember the fight with Nigel, Eater of Worlds far longer than a fight with a nameless bog horror.
- For classroom writing, hand out a field-guide name and ask for the entry that goes with it: where the Lesser Sock-Eater lives, what it eats and how to spot one.
- If you want a name that is funny and true, use the real-animal strand. Sarcastic Fringehead, Screaming Hairy Armadillo and Confused Flour Beetle are common names of real species, so they double as trivia.
Frequently asked questions
What are some funny creature names?
Mock field-guide names are the quickest laugh: Three-Toed Fumblebeak, Bog-Standard Bogwallop, Overconfident Tadpole and Apologetic Wood Pigeon. One-word mashups such as Porcupineapple, Flamingoat and Nincompoodle work well for games, and overlong names like Several Frogs in a Trench Coat suit picture books.
What are good funny monster names?
Put a meek name on something terrible or a terrible title on something small. From this list, try Cuddles the Unspeakable, Boris Under the Bed, Keith the Colossus and Mr. Snuggles, Bane of Kingdoms for the first kind, and Fang the Negligible or The Dark Lord Marshmallow for the second. Monsters with jobs, such as Banshee Librarian and Kraken Lifeguard, are a third option.
Are any of these real animals?
Yes, 55 of the 500. Names such as Blobfish, Wobbegong, Star-Nosed Mole, Yeti Crab, Go-Away-Bird and Hickory Horned Devil are common names of real animals. Another 16, including Jackalope, Hoop Snake and Fur-Bearing Trout, come from folklore and tall tales (the Snipe is a real bird too, but it is here for the snipe hunt). Everything else is invented, and the mock-Latin names such as Fluffus Ridiculus are jokes, not scientific names.
Can children use this list?
It was written with children in mind. The humor comes from silly sounds, grand titles and monsters who knit or need glasses, with no toilet jokes and no gore. The list was screened for offensive terms, so read your pick aloud once before it goes on a classroom wall.
