Exotic Island Name Generator

The most exotic-sounding island names in the world are real ones, and they come from a few distinct language families. Polynesian names (Bora Bora, Rangiroa, Aitutaki, Nuku Hiva) use open vowels, doubled syllables, and the words motu (islet), nuku (land), and vai (water). Malay and Indonesian names start with Pulau, Nusa, or Gili, Thai and Khmer islands begin with Koh, Malagasy islands with Nosy, and Spanish and Portuguese islands with Isla, Cayo, or Ilha. Once you know those markers, you can invent islands that sound like they belong on the same chart.

The list mixes three kinds of names: real islands worth using as inspiration or as-is (Praslin, Siargao, Bequia, Fernando de Noronha), invented names built from real linguistic parts (Tuamana, Motu Reva, Isla Corazón, Pulau Mutiara), and English cay and bay names in the Caribbean style (Frigate Cay, Cinnamon Bay). English-speaking colonists usually named small islands after birds, plants, or shapes, which is why Half Moon Cay and Pelican Key feel authentic.

For fiction and games, choose the language family first, then keep the name to two to four syllables. A resort or fantasy paradise can carry a soft, vowel-rich Polynesian name, while a pirate haven or smuggler's cove suits a blunt English cay name.
