Frat Name Generator

Real fraternities take their names from Greek letters that stand for a secret Greek or Latin motto, which is why nearly every national is two or three letters long: Sigma Chi, Kappa Sigma, Beta Theta Pi. Members almost never say the full name in conversation. They shorten it (Sig Ep, Pike, Teke, Fiji, Deke, Sammy), refer to the chapter house by a nickname (the Castle, the Barn, the Zoo), or just say the letters. A fictional frat that only ever gets its full three-letter name sounds like a brochure, not a house.

For stories, the safest and most convincing move is a made-up combination that follows the same rules: two or three Greek letters, one strong opening sound, and a name that abbreviates cleanly. Delta Tau Chi (Animal House), Lambda Lambda Lambda (Revenge of the Nerds), Delta Psi Beta (Neighbors) and Kappa Tau Gamma (Greek) all obey this and none of them exist. Joke frats use letter puns instead: Tappa Kegga Brew, I Felta Thi, Eta Bita Pi. Older or fancier fictional houses can skip Greek letters entirely and go for a society name, like the Order of the Silver Paddle or the Skull and Paddle Society, which is closer to how Ivy League eating clubs and final clubs are actually named.
