About female superhero names

Female superhero names have their own history. The Golden and Silver Ages leaned on Girl, Woman, Lady and Miss attached to a power or theme: Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Invisible Woman, Phantom Lady, Miss Martian. From the 1970s onward the codenames got shorter and more personal, especially at Marvel, where heroines like Storm, Rogue, Jubilee, Dazzler and Psylocke take a single word that describes a power, a mood or a look. Modern heroines often just use their civilian name in the mask, which is why Jessica Jones, Kate Bishop and Kamala Khan sit alongside Ms. Marvel and Hawkeye.

The original names here follow those same moulds. You will find title names (Madame Midnight, Lady Lodestone, Doctor Dusk, Captain Freedom), power words (Starquake, Hailstorm, Brainwave), animal and mythic codenames (Falconess, Pantheress, Valkyrie Vale, Morrigan), colour and gemstone names (Scarlet Spear, Emerald Empress, Azure Arrow), and alliterative two-word names in the Lois Lane tradition (Cosmic Kate, Clockwork Clara, Nightmare Nell).

Use the canon section for trivia, costume ideas and reference, and the original section when you need a codename for an OC, a tabletop character, a Halloween persona or a web comic. A good heroine name should hint at the power set, fit on a chest emblem and sound right shouted across a battlefield.

How to choose female superhero names

  • Match the mould to the era and tone. Girl and Woman names feel classic or retro, one-word codenames feel modern, and civilian names signal a grounded street-level hero.
  • Say it out loud as a battle cry and as a news headline. If it works in both ("Hailstorm saves downtown"), it will work on the page.
  • Pair the name with the power set but leave mystery. Starquake tells you roughly what she does; Vespera tells you when she operates and nothing more.
  • Avoid Girl for adult heroines unless the character is deliberately retro. Lady, Madame, Captain or Doctor carry authority without the diminutive.
  • Search the name before publishing original work. Short single-word codenames are often already used across 80 years of comics.

Frequently asked questions

Which female superheroes are included?

The canon section covers DC heroines like Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Black Canary and Zatanna, Marvel heroines like Storm, Captain Marvel, She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel, and characters from Image, Wildstorm, Dark Horse and anime such as Sailor Moon and Starlight. The rest of the list is original names in the same styles.

How do I make up a good female superhero name?

Start with what she does or where she comes from, then pick a mould: a power word (Frostbite), a title plus theme (Lady Eclipse), an animal (Lioness), or an alliterative two-word name (Cosmic Kate). Check that it reads well as a logo and cannot be confused with an existing character.

Can I use these names for my own character or comic?

The original names are free to use for OCs, fan fiction, RPG characters and costumes. Established heroines such as Supergirl or Black Widow are trademarked, so keep those to fan works, quizzes and cosplay rather than commercial projects.

Why do so many classic heroines have Girl or Woman in the name?

Many were created as counterparts or successors to a male hero (Supergirl, Batgirl, Hawkgirl, Spider-Woman), so the gendered suffix signalled the connection. Newer heroines tend to get independent one-word names or keep their real name instead.
