Generate fantasy clothing names for RPG loot tables, shop inventories and fiction: enchanted pieces like Gown of the Hollow Moon and Boots of the Thaw, court finery like Cloth-of-Gold Houppelande, wizard regalia, and plain tailor's wares like Homespun Wool Tunic.

About fantasy clothing names

Clothing in a fantasy world does two jobs: it tells the reader who a character is, and in a game it is loot. This list of 500 covers both. Named pieces follow the magic-item pattern of garment plus epithet (Gown of the Hollow Moon, Boots of the Thaw, Sash of the Storm Dancer) or belong to somebody (Old Bettrys's Wedding Kirtle, Lord Carrow's Peacock Doublet). Plain wares are named the way a tailor's stall would list them, by wearer, cloth and condition: Homespun Wool Tunic, Miller's Flour-Dusted Apron, Twice-Turned Coat.

Much of the flavor comes from real historical garment words. A kirtle is a fitted gown worn from the Middle Ages into the sixteenth century, a surcoat is an outer garment worn over other clothing or armor, a tabard is a short open-sided coat best known from heralds, and a houppelande is a full, long-sleeved gown of the late Middle Ages. Hose, doublet, coif, wimple, hennin, poulaines and pattens come from the same wardrobe, and fabric names such as samite, fustian, kersey and sendal do the same work for cloth.

The list runs from peasant homespun through guild livery and court finery to wizard regalia and priestly vestments, with footwear, gloves, belts and sashes throughout. Body armor, helmets, crowns and most cloaks are left to their own generators.

How to choose fantasy clothing names

  • Let the cloth carry the class. Fustian, frieze and russet say working people, while samite, brocade and cloth-of-gold say court, before any epithet is added.
  • For a loot table, pick a name that hints at the effect. Boots of the Goat Path suggests sure footing and Gloves of the Patient Healer suggests a healing bonus, with no rules text needed.
  • Stock a shop mostly with plain wares such as Darned Grey Stockings and add one named piece such as Doublet of the Silver Tongue, so the special item stands out.
  • Give heirlooms an owner and a history. Aunt Petronel's Funeral Gloves raises a question that players will want answered.
  • Look up an unfamiliar garment word before you describe it at the table. A hennin is a tall headdress and pattens are overshoes, and readers who know will notice a mistake.

Frequently asked questions

What are some good fantasy clothing names?

For enchanted pieces try Gown of the Hollow Moon, Tunic of the Green Road or Slippers of the Midnight Ball. For court scenes there are Sable-Lined Houppelande and Lord Carrow's Peacock Doublet, and for a wizard Archmage's Star-Embroidered Robe or Wizard's Third-Best Hat.

Are the garment words real?

Most are. Kirtle, doublet, surcoat, tabard, jerkin, hose, coif, wimple, chaperon and poulaines are historical European garments, and samite, kersey and fustian are historical cloths. The epithets, the owners and one-word names like Emberhem are made up for fantasy settings.

Can I use these as magic items in D&D or Pathfinder?

Yes. The names carry no rules, so you can attach any effect your game allows. A name usually suggests one: Boots of the Second Wind fits a stamina effect, and Hat of Forgotten Names fits a disguise or a memory effect.

Does the list include armor or cloaks?

It has no armor, helmets or crowns and only a small number of cloaks, capes and hoods, because the site has separate generators for those. The list concentrates on robes, gowns, tunics, doublets, footwear, gloves, belts, sashes and hats.
