About Eragon dragon names
The dragons of Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle have names that sound old and northern, because the Ancient Language of the books borrows heavily from Old Norse. Male names tend to be short and hard, like Glaedr and Thorn. Others carry longer, rolling names, such as Umaroth and Shruikan. Saphira shows the softer pattern: open vowels, an -a ending and an echo of the gemstone that matches her blue scales.
Those five names and Fírnen are kept here as style anchors from the books. The rest are new names built on the same patterns: hard names such as Svaldr, Hrothnir and Kolmar, elder names such as Velgamor and Ingaroth, flowing names such as Sevira and Ysmira, and gem and color echoes such as Emeris and Cobaldr.
Saphira is also called Bjartskular, Brightscales, so some entries add a second name coined the same way, such as Arnvith Svartskular or Falvorn Eldvaengr, or an English byname like Thyra the Storm-Born. Others are wild dragons named for where they nest, from the Spine to Vroengard, Old Norse words such as Eldr and Dreki, and English words in the vein of Thorn. The coined second names follow the sound of the Ancient Language and should not be read as vocabulary from the books.
How to choose Eragon dragon names
- Match the name to the scales. Color is the first thing anyone notices about a dragon in these books, so Emeris or Viridir suits green, Rubiel or Ragvin the Red suits red, and Argenor or Isura Silfrskular suits silver.
- Pair the dragon's name with the Rider's. A short, hard name such as Haldr sits well beside a longer Rider name, and a flowing one such as Thaliora balances a blunt one.
- Keep the long names for old dragons. Velgamor or Hjalmaroth sounds right on a dragon the size of a hill and odd on a hatchling, where Skandr or Briar fits better.
- Split a coined byname to say it: svart-skular, eld-vaengr. The first halves come from Old Norse words for colors and elements: svart is black, gull is gold, raud is red, eld is fire and is is ice.
- Use marks sparingly in fan fiction. Fírnen carries a single accent, and one accent or one apostrophe, as in Brönvir or Kor'Haldun, is enough to make a name look like it belongs.
Frequently asked questions
Are these names from the Eragon books?
Six of them are taken from the books on purpose: Saphira, Glaedr, Thorn, Shruikan, Umaroth and Fírnen, kept as examples of the style. The others were built to sound as if they belong beside them. If it matters for your story whether a name already appears somewhere in the series, look it up before you use it.
What does Bjartskular mean?
It is Saphira's byname in the Ancient Language and means Brightscales. A few dragons in the list carry it, such as Maevra Bjartskular, and many more have second names coined on the same pattern, such as Caelith Gullskular and Olvara Stormvaengr. Those coined bynames are built on Old Norse roots for colors, fire, ice and wings, so do not treat them as Ancient Language vocabulary.
How do I tell male and female dragon names apart?
The books give a pattern, not a rule: Glaedr, Thorn and Shruikan are male and end on consonants, while Saphira ends in -a. In this list names such as Svaldr, Kolmar and Hjaldr lean male, names such as Sevira, Valmera and Irelda lean female, and the word names and most elder names fit either.
Can I use these names in fan fiction or a tabletop game?
Yes. The new names suit an original Rider's dragon in fan fiction, a dragon in a D&D campaign or a mount in a video game. Saphira and the other five book names are already taken by characters in the series, so pick one of the new names for a dragon of your own.
